End of Energy Day

Today marks two years since the end of Energy 92.7. I had the privilege to be their engineer from just after the start, to the very end. A fun place, fun people, and I miss it.

Now to play my thumb drive full of the music again, and listen to C89.5 some more.

As an East Coast listener of the late KNGY (I live in the DC metro), I can sadly say that I miss it too. It was a truly unique radio station and nothing else, not BPM, not B96 HD2, not C89.5, has ever matched the energy (pardon the pun) of that radio station. I'm glad that Fernando, Greg and Joey all landed on their feet at CBS - but I miss the sound of that little class A.

Since you were their CE, do you know where I might snag some of their audio? I'd love to hear that imaging again. Joey V did some great work.

They sounded happy. Happy is a good thing, which is why we keep watching the Giants even though they lose a lot. There's too much nasty in the world. We need more happy. I feel a T-shirt coming on...

A great station for sure. The last independent owned and operated station in the Bay Area. Love dance music and they did it right. You can see some promos on You Tube. I have one of their CD's and have a lot of the playlist on my ipod

92.7 is still independently owned & operated by Ed Stolz.

If one counts being co-owned with KRCK in Palm Desert and KFRH in (North) Las Vegas, and programmed by the same guy outside this market, as independent. One could argue it either way, really. More independent than Now & Wild, granted.

Joey V is with Clear Channel San Francisco working for ex Energy PD and consultant, Don Parker

Riffing on David's pack-rat post/thread, I have a styrofoam cooler full of old Energy memorabilia cleaned out of the offices shortly after handover.

I feel like there should be some kind of charity auction for all this junk... can't quite bring myself to throw it away.

In your case I'd definitely suggest offering it to the BARM or auctioning it or something, given that it represents a unique situation that probably few people have managed to document. Another option is contacting the Prelinger Library on 8th and Folsom in SF. They're a private library open to the public. Rick Prelinger is also on the board of the Internet Archives. URL: http://www.prelingerlibrary.org/

The reason I haven't done so with my material is that it's not a collection, but random pieces of material, esoteric material of little worth, personal notes, audition tapes, and material that is duplicated elsewhere.

WGN-TV reran the Monk episode, twice in the past month, featuring the studios of 92.7. Had to laugh as the station was shown promoting a Willie Nelson concert !

KYLI 96.7 and The Vibe (now on 99.7 and the other "Highway" stations) both out of Las Vegas have iPhone and Android Apps for streaming and make a good substitute for Energy 92.7

Not a replacement of course. How is the stupid "Rev-FM" doing in the ratings? What a dumb name for a CHR.

Their 6+ ratings are not bad for the smallest stick in town.

They seem to have zero spot load. This two years on. I don't understand what the business model is with the place.

I'm having a hard time listening to 92.7 because I really don't like the music at all. However, in the various dayparts I do manage to listen (about 6 or 7 times for about 15 minutes each time) I have not yet heard a single spot. I've heard a lot about commercial-free music. Maybe Stolz got so much money from KWOD that he's running 92.7 as a hobby? His business model baffles me, too.

The one spot break seems to be around :50. Sometimes they roll right into music and sometimes I've heard a car repair spot.

Hopefully all the advertisers are boycotting the station! ;D

Doesn't matter how many people listen to you if no one's buying air time.

What I hear by very roundbout channels is that they've gone 2 years without hiring a sales manager.

That's gotta be a first.

2 YEARS with no sales manager (or spots)? That's amazing. But really, how much is he spending? They've advertised for talent a few times, do they ever hire anyone? I've always found it more surprising they don't do anything with their Vegas property. They actually have a full market signal there and a decent chunk of ratings!

REV went as high as a 1.6 in 6+ a few months ago but have fallen back to under-1 range.
Wonder how well they do right in the center of the city? From a programming standpoint, the music is much improved from when they launched. There are certainly musical difference between NOW and REV.

Well they're still (AFAIK) in the old Bonneville suite at 400 2nd. That held 95.7 and sublet a few cubes and a studio to SBS's La Raza. This for one full-timer and a board-op or two. I think since the building is nearly empty, the owner probably cut them a deal to stay but that place is way too big for what they're doing with it. Three rooms would probably suffice.

The tx is still where it was, and I think the rent there is 8-10K a month. Moving that is not an option. The only other sites want an arm and a leg (or are too high).

As far as KFRH, near as I can tell the philosophy is run it as cheap as possible, do as little as possible, and sell the ads. In LV, they get a big enough share to get some ads.

They do hire talent from time to time but they don't seem to last long. Not sure whether they jump or get pushed. They did run national spots for a while, but even those aren't happening now.

The starting PD was by all reports an idiot. That guy would let the legal ID run a half hour late, loaded songs with power intros for other stations, and more than once forgot to load the next day's log so the place would go silent around 1 AM. When they hired somebody who knew what he was doing, it got better.

I'm curious what musical differences you hear now between Now and Rev.
