End of the Line for WRDU?

A friend at work said she got called about radio listening to rock and country stations. Her husband took the call and was asked a bunch of stuff about classic rock and old and new country. Could be almost anyone doing the research but I wonder if it is a fact finding mission for Clear Channel. Now that WRDU and the River share bottom honors as the worst billing radio stations in Raleigh something has got t give. Anyone else been called?

Here comes another JACK or Dave or (insert favorite cutesy name here). It's only a matter of time. If this had been two years ago it would have been Jammin' Oldies or some variation thereof.

Two flamethrower signals and CC can't figure out what to do with them except run off the listeners. I'm available for consultation.

I worked for the 'originial' 'RDU, 'QDR, in 1980...and cried for days (really!)
when 'QDR changed to country...while at the KATT in Oklahoma City I read
the guys moved everything to the new 106.1, RDU....I threw a party! Now, what? 20 years later CC is pulling the plug? Please....I too am available for consultation!

Re: Got the same call...

I got the same call Wednesday evening...they wanted someone 18-34...
Unfortunately I am 42 and I gave it to my wife. After talking to this
person on the phone for 25 minutes she hung up and said the questions
were more about country (especially classic country) than classic rock and
new country...

Don't hold your breath for a "JACK" or anything similar. WRSN, WRAL and RIVER have the variety hits format(s) covered.

IF, I say IF, RDU meets an end, which will be a sad day, I think country is the most likely choice. Arguably WTRG should've been taken country (too soon to have an opinion on River, need at least 18 months). Heritage active and classic rocks have been flipping of late, either for spanish or some other format. Those stations were low on the pole for some time. RDU has been on the skids for about 18 months...it was fine before Nov '03. I sincerely hope (and think) CC can turn it around. They just need to go back to where they station was summer '03, when it had a 4.5 12 plus. Station was rockin' (pun intended). It's a tough road with the core being jerked around the way it has. P1s have expectations - give it to them. Simple.
______________

CC has taken two dominant classic rock stations in NC (WRFX, WRDU) and turned them into non-entities. Rack up the Kix 106 jingles.

Is WRFX hurting too? I haven't really looked at the Charlotte ratings lately.

I listened to them some last week and I have to say, they are a good sounding radio station. I wish WRDU sounded a little more like "The Big Hairy Fox"

In any event, WRFX will take the same fate as WLNK... even with low ratings, they will be a casualty of the syndication network based there and probably not change a thing.
______________

I think RDU sounds good. WRFX sounds good, but they are doing the exact same thing since sign on. You could take a broadcast day from 1991, repeat it today, and few people would notice. WRFX had a good trend, but they are no where near the ratings they had, well, back when RDU also ruled the Triangle. It was common through the early 90's for them to pull a 9 share, and finish third or even second to WSOC.

I listened a bit to RDU on the way home a while back and their afternoon jock was great. But when he went to the phones, he basically had to dial into his office line and retrieve mail because he didn't have access to a studio line. And then he gave out his office number. Maybe it was voice tracked out of town. It seemed like a hokey thing during an otherwise decent sounding shift.

Blade is live AFAIK, but he's been doing that voicemail thing for a couple years now. I would doubt it's because there's no studio line, but stranger things have happened I gues...
______________

Re: WRDU 106.1 JAMZ?(was Re: End of the Line for WRDU?)

seems far fetched ay!....yeah...the RDU market only has one urban station..and its probrably the most piss poor urban in the region (NC-SC-VA)...CC has been successful in the past with urbans, blowing up 106.5 a few years ago in richmond va for urban and in less than a year, dethroned Power 92 Jamz WCDX.....and in Norfolk WOWI 102.9 has been the ratings leader for about 15 years now...with competion from WWHV which is well programmed but on a poor stick, and even themselves running on 92.1 with WBHH (We're blazing hip hop)...they blew it up 2 years later for the "lite-format"...that signal never recovered in ratings or revenue despite TV advertising, two signals (107.7) and nationally syndicated shows...the night before the format switch was great...disgruntled DJ's forgot where the radio edits were....

It's a "bit" taking the voicemail messages because Blade "doesn't answer the phone lines". Messages are edited for "comedic" affect. RDU, like all stations, has actual request lines. In fact, I believe there's 4-5 available lines. Blade just busy's the lines until he wants to answer them (contests, etc).

CNCGuy is right but for different reasons. Urban makes a lot of sense for Clear Channel because it gives them a legitimate means of saying to advertisers they cover the whole market--except Spanish. It is one move that can get advertisers to take the whole cluster seriously again. It would also cut into K-97s numbers and move G back up the 12+ ladder.
