End of the World Live On TV!

I’ve always heard (rumors) that CNN has a “stand by program” that in the event of the end of the world (Doomsday,) they would run this program on the “last” official day of life on earth.

I’ve heard that it shows beautiful scenery throughout the world, and some other items.

Does anyone know if this is true, or just an urban legend?

If it is true, what does it actually show, and the audio, is it music? Scripture from the Bible?
 
Reminds me alot of a scene in the film "Gremlins 2", where a TV network, whose studios are being overrun by the bad gremlins, runs a tape announcing that they'll be leaving the air due to the end of the world, complete with pretty scenery. The announcer concluded the tape with: "we hope you have enjoyed your programs much as you've enjoyed... life."
 
Fox news has programming planned for that very same scenario as well. just a loop that constantly repeats "it's Clinton's Fault..."

If Armageddon hits, is anyone really going to be watching television? Will there be 9/11 type crawls and tickers detailing which civilizations have been wiped out? They could structure it like New Years Eve 2001.

No, to answer your question, I have not heard that at all.

I remember reading about this back when Ted Turner controlled the network. I imagine it's been forgotten about by now.
 
I think the Discovery Channel is about to start running a show called Planet-Earth starting March 25th. It is an 11 part series..... So does that mean that we only haev 13 weeks left? ;D
 
Ted Turner supposedly had something of that nature locked away in a vault to air in the event the missles started flying. Similarly, in the fifties the Eisenhower administration had Arthur Godfrey record a message to run in the event of atomic attack, assuring civilians that America would survive and freedom would ultimately prevail, etc.

I know it's not 2015 yet, but isn't there supposed to be a Scenery channel? Sort of like the one in the Back to the future movie? Or did it not sign on yet? :D
 
The story about Ted Turner and the final programming for CNN started about 5 years into their existence, before the Time-Warner/AOL debacle. Supposedly it is a 90-240 minute program of hymns sung by the Navy Choir and the scener, nature life. It is supposedly locked in the vault of the office of the President of CNN, with instructions for it to be aired once a world-wide cataclism is confirmed. The further instructions were for it to be put on the air, then all CNN employees released to go to their homes.

Why the Navy Choir? Other than Ted's experience as a sailing captain, I don't know.

Remember in DEEP IMPACT that MSNBC was shown to stay on the air broadcasting coverage up until the last minute.

The Godfrey tape was also supposed to have Ed Murrow seeking to reassure the citizens. No one today acknowledges the existence of the tape, though there is a lot of circumstantial evidence it existed. Would have fit right in the the old CONELRAD concept. And remember the scene in that NBC darma about the nuclear device set off by terrorists in Charleston SC and how the actor playing the part seemingly inspired by Frank Reynolds railing at the audience that when the government took over the broadcasting in a national emergecny no one would get "untainted" news?

Just some interesting things to speculate about.

Sounds like the program Edward G. Robinson watched in Soylent Green as he was euthanized.

And I, too, have read Uncle Ted had an end of the world video prepared.
Of course, if the end of the world is Jesus beaming down to Jerusalem, then the 700 Club will cover it. Unless Pat Robertson was caught up in the rapture.
 
There are many of us who speculate on how the world will end, and if you
read biblical scripture, it gives us insight on events that we are experiencing
right now, and there is no doubt we are living in a period of history that will
lead to changes, and most people will not be prepared because in their
thinking everything will be alright, and that is not true, we have two choices
for those alive right now, if many who read this reply are wise, make the
right one, besides according to god's word, "this world will never end"
because there will be a "new" heaven and a "new" earth.
 
California viewers will see the following: "Zis is Ahnuld Schwarzenegger, Guvernator of the State of Kollyfornia. Ze planet is going to blow! GET DOWN!!!!!!"

Turner created Cable News Network in 1980 as another cable channel. He figured that many like him got home too late to watch the network news at 6:30 PM. CNN was instrumental in creating the modern "all news, all the time" television format. In a typical bit of bravado, Turner vowed upon launching CNN that, "We won't be signing off until the world ends. We'll be on, and we will cover the end of the world, live, and that will be our last event. . . . and when the end of the world comes, we'll play 'Nearer My God to Thee' before we sign off."

...before he died Dr. Frank Stanton, former President of CBS and Godfrey's patron amongst the CBS brass (Paley hated Godfrey), confirmed before he died that the Godfrey tape indeed existed. The NBC tele-movie you reference was 1983's SPECIAL BULLETIN, with Ed Flanders of "St. Elsewhere" doing the Reynolds schtick...
