End of WVOI?

Is this it for WVOI 1480? I haven't been able to get the station for almost three weeks. I used to like it because it had Scott Shannon on it but now when I drive through Naples,,,nothing. If a station is off air for ten days don't they have to turn in their license? I didn't hear anything about special authority to stay off. Why would they shut this station off ? It was so good!!!

Back in the late '90's the owners of WVOI 1480 applied for an "extended band" station on 1660 -WCNZ. The FCC allowed many station owners to have an extended band station if they would shut down their low band station after 5 years of broadcasting on both stations. The FCC felt 5 years was enough time to get the listenership to move up the dial to 1660khz.

Now that the 5 years are over...they've shut down 1480 WVOI just like the FCC wanted them to do. Or so it appears.... :-\

It is off (although informally) very likely for good. Technically, it should have been turned off four years ago. The 1660 license was issued in 2001.

The expanded band license was applied for in 1991, and 1660 was built in 1999, going on the air May 21 of that year. The station operated on a CP until September of 2001. That would be when the five-year clock would've started ticking.
