Energy 107.9 Melbourne/Palm Bay

Great station, any way to increase power to better cover Melbourne/Cocoa? Anyone know the likelihood of this happening? Just curious.

107.9 is licensed as a low power FM (LPFM) with a maximum of a 100 watts at 100 feet or the equivalent there of. Some LPFM have extended there coverage by stringing together a network of translators. An LPFM down in Melbourne has reportably done exactly that but I can't remember which one.

Hello. The station you are thinking that has done this is the smooth jazz outlet in that area. I believe it's called the groove. I don't think 107.9 could improve there signal because of WMGF and WIRK in West Palm. I remember before 107.9 came on WIRK was a regular catch in Palm Bay.

Treat it like any other DX target - outdoor yagi for home listening, Pioneer Supertuner 3D for the car. You will get it. I had to suffer through the non-Z88 days of 88.5 in Palm Bay (a mile and a half from the tower), Pioneer Supertuner 3D not only did it, but also got WAY-FM out of West Palm. Now at least 88.5 is a Z-88 affiliate. I had to hold a Yagi up during a remote broadcast for Z88 to get rid of WWIA interference. They called me the "antenna man" during the remote.

The funny things people do to get their preferred music format! I am so glad that LPFM is giving unusual formats a place on the dial! Even if I don't like them all, the chances are greatly increased that somebody will put something on that I do like! For once the FCC did something right in dismissing 6000 useless translators ---

AH, I remember WWIA as well. I was not far from the transmitter as well and i had so many images of that station on my radios. I had a sony walkman and an audio vox portable cd player back then. I bet if I had the pl-390 back then it would have gotten 88.3 in palm bay over the 88.5.

I notice that WPOZ has taken 88.5, 88.1, 88.7 stations in the area off the air after they bought them out, and applied for a massive upgrade of the 88.3 signal. Smart move if you ask me! 100kW off of a 1300 foot tower will really cover Melbourne, Palm Bay, Daytona, Ormond, Lakeland, and other areas better than the patchwork of translators. If they could only get hold of 88.5 in the Tampa Bay area and take it dark, they could be heard coast to coast!

Energy 107.9 is run by the same people in the same building that does Smooth Jazz 93.1 & its translators.

Good luck on 88.5 from Tampa. That would take a couple of million dollars or more to get that sold. I know that that is a pretty important station in the community. That station just went through a recent upgrade as well.
