Energy 92.7 QUESTIONS!

How long has this excellent station been around? (I'm on the East Coast and I listen on the Net.) What kind of signal do they have? I'm assuming we're not talking about a 50,000-watter here?

I wonder if anyone knows how they do in their target demo? On the board, you can only say where they rank ("7th place," "8th place," etc.) but if you have actual numbers, please e-mail me at [email protected].

Began October 2004.
510 Watts
We do very, very well in our target demo, which of course I can't post here.

Thanks for the info. (Is [email protected] your e-mail address or does that go to a whole bunch of folks at the station? Thanks!)

Re: Energy 92.7 Top Secret!!

What a joke! Yeah, yeah... it's all top secret confidential CIA-type stuff. Like no one else can figure it out.

Re: Energy 92.7 Top Secret!!

Hey, Mr. Attitude... It's "top secret confidential" as far as Radio-Info is concerned. They don't let us post actual Arb numbers here.

If you're so smart, let us know how we can "figure out" how the station does in their target. I'd love to see you crack that one.

Just a little clarification and color commentary on that...

They had a solid spring book in their target demo IN THE CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO (i.e. San Francisco county).

This is only about 15% of the entire Market #4 metro area as rated by Arbitron so they don't touch Santa Clara county and are a bit above average in Alameda County and Marin county and I would say average to bad in the others (San Mateo, Contra Costa).

Now of course they will argue that they are only selling to local businesses in the areas they are strong (like SF county) but we all know this puts an upper limit on how well they can do.

At the end of the day, it still comes down to whether they can generate an impressive return for the investors who paid $38 million for the station and unless their GM is going gangbusters over there in gross sales, this station will have a limited life even if some folks like it. I maintain, even sales aside, that it is a solid station but not a great station and not particularly well-optimized to the Bay Area (especially in terms of brand, marketing, personalities, and it's overall aura even if the music is okay.)

Absolutely agree!!! It's all about money! And $33 million can't be made back at approx. 1.5-2million a year in billing. Now that Next Media is into San Jose (and they're a major investor), it will be interesting to see what happens!

They paid $38 million for a 510 watt station? Isn't that kinda steep?

Why do you think dance music isn't well suited for the market? I can't imagine a better market for it than San Fran!

They just moved their tower to sutro and had to lower their wattage wich "supposed to" improve their signal. I still think their crap in San Bruno area, just yesterday I was up in the oakland hills (orinda) and had 92.7 KTOM from salinas blairing loud and strong also in South san francisco on Hwy 101 same thing. In Pacifica they are almost non existant. I love this station and glad its here but I can only take sooo much crossover and have to resort to changing the channel or listen to CD's

I kind of think it was a stupid move from going 3600 watts (???) down to 500 and say they are improving.

Also NextMedia is getting a KILLER deal ... what 80 mil for 2 signals that can reach SF ok??? thats 40 mil a stick.... mayby Flying Bear Media should of held out and bought those sticks....keep one sell the other or just keep both and have 2 gay orentied stations....one for music one for talk???

Flying Bear and NextMedia have the same investors behind them and Flying Bear will eventually be operating all three properties.

I'm sorry. I'm completely outside of the loop here. Has the station recently been sold?

Why does everyone think signal deficiencies are all money-related?

Energy, like any licensed station, has to comply with FCC technical regulations in terms of how much effective radiated power they can use based on their height above average terrain at the transmitter site.

Simply put, you only get a certain amount of power in your FCC license. No station is going to use less than they can. New investors doesn't mean a station can suddenly crank up the power.

It will be interesting.

I'm sure they'll leave KBAY in the AC format... I'm not too optimistic that they'll program it very successfully. In an umbrella market like San Jose with a dominant AC in SF like KOIT, you need to know Santa Clara county to optimize your ratings and revenue in that kind of situation, so I'm not holding my breath. As it was, revenues were going to be soft this year at KBAY/KEZR which is why the purchase price was lower than one might have thought it would be.

Now as far as KEZR goes, if the NextMedia/Flying Bear connection is as strong as it seems (I know they have a major investor in common but I'm not sure if Next Media actually invested in Flying Bear), there is a possibility that they might simulcase Energy 92.7 on 106.5 in the South Bay. San Jose would likely be somewhat receptive to that music but it's still not the best product in that market, I don't think. The other key problem is that neither 106.5 nor 92.7 reliably covers the I-680 corridor in Contra Costa county, especially north of 580. San Ramon, Dublin, Walnut Creek, Concord, Pleasant Hill, Antioch, (and even parts of Livermore and Pleasanton) etc. will be dead to that simulcast and that will really hurt them if they sell it as a full area signal. 106.5 + 92.7 definitely does NOT equal the power and coverage of the other major Class B licenses. So they might make more money not simulcasting. I'm sure they're weighing all of this right now.
