Energy AZ RIP

And that's a good question because I doubt that Arizona had a strong history with freestyle like it is in New York, Miami, Philly/So. Jersey.

Yet Latinos in general are open-minded to good dance music. For me, I've leaned more on the house side of things so as long as the music and beats are good, the station is serving me! :) I'm sure a lot of Latinos feel that as well. Yet for those that remember back in the day, freestyle STILL has some sort of effect. Even Pulse 87 plays the classic freestyle stuff that 'KTU had been doing all these years.

“Frankly, I’m surprised “Energy” lasted this long. For the past 2 years, it has been going up against “Movin’” (KMVA), which plays a lot of dance music. With KNRJ’s weak signal, they held out well in the battle. But, in the end, “Movin’” got the best of them.

Have you actually listened to Movin' 97.5? They do not play much 90's dance. Here are some 90's dance classics that were popular in this market that are missing from their playlist (as far as I know) --

La Bouche - Be My Lover
Real McCoy - Another Night
Corona - Rhythm of the Night
Li'l Suzy - Take Me In Your Arms
Everything but the Girl - Missing
No Mercy - Where Do You Go?
Culture Beat - Mr. Vain
Livin' Joy - Dreamer
Snap - Rhythm is a Dancer
Ace of Base - All That She Wants (I'd say this is more pop than dance, but it's still a song that absolutely belongs on the station.)

...and so on.

I seriously doubt that KNRJ & KMVA have considered themselves direct competitors. (If anything, KMVA is competing with Energy's sister station -- Rhythmic Oldies KAJM.)

Other songs that were popular as currents in Phoenix, also apparently missing from Movin's playlist (yes, I know that some of these didn't originate in the 90's) --

Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone
Amber - This is Your Night
ATC - Around the World
Billie Ray Martin - Your Lovin' Arms
Captain Hollywood Project - More and More
Cathy Dennis - Touch Me (All Night Long)
Cher - Believe
Corina - Temptations
Darude - Sandstorm
Eiffel 65 - Blue
Fun Factory - I Wanna Be With U
Fun Factory - Close to You
Haddaway - What is Love
K7 - Move It Like This
Max-a-Million - Fat Boy
Max-a-Million - Take Your Time
Nicki French - Total Eclipse of the Heart
Planet Soul - Set U Free
Tara Kemp - Hold You Tight (again, more pop than dance, but still a huge hit in the market that belongs on Movin').

Even Hot AC competitor KMXP (Mix 96.9) plays some of these during their "90's @ 9" segment!

Hmm, that's interesting. Which artists / type of music would you play to target latin people? I would love to know!

Charles Thank you for the response. Mike congrats on getting getting back in with KNRJ -- try to squeeze some dance music in there.

Techno Kelvin; By targeting the latino community a station could play more freestyle: invented by Puerto Ricans in New York, loved and appreciated by all Hispanics everywhere. They will recognize names such as Judy Torres, Lil Suzy and George Lamond etc..

Tony Santiago; Thank you for your response. Did you know that Steve Dahl is still on the FM dials in Chicago? WJMK JAck FM Chicago and I believe he was on Freefm before it switched to Fresh FM.
http://www.iknowjack.com/ (on Jack FM)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Dahl (scroll to disco demolition night).
If I had to blame one person for the ups and downs of Dance music today it would be him, because he used a mass media tool to spew hate and shape public opinion of a genre that he did not like. I play a promo that goes..."If the music is too fast, then you're just too old" It was dedicated to him.

Looks like the pre stunting has started on Energy. They have liners with some movie clips indicating they are on the last frontier and they must sacrifice themselves. They also have a liner indicating the transmission will end soon. It looks like they will be having some special shows on thursday and friday this week celebrating the life of Energy AZ. Can anyone record the stream and send us all some files? This is something to keep for the history books.

I just dont get it,,, Phoenix has no more format holes,, unless maybe an upbeat Spanish Rhythmic like Casa 106.7,,, but still the signal will be much better, but no way can they compete with the full signal stations in the market like Kiss and 101.5 Jamz,,,,,,, They should give Dance a Chance with the new TX, and I bet they get back some of the older listeners that probably gave up on the weak signal and went with net radio,,, which at this time is not cheap or reliable to stream with your phone in the car,, I tried it for awhile,, but I didnt care for all the buffering and drop outs, and the very expensive phone bill,,,, plus, most stations have to send you the URL to type in if you want to stream them,, only a few stations would give this to me,,, Slam FM in Holland gave me their's, and so did both RGR FM and Top Radio in Belgium....

Monday's "Resurrection Flashback Lunch" included "Another Night" and "Mr. Vain" (separated by a commercial stopset). When I was listening to the show live, I thought it was a very odd (but wonderful) coincidence that both songs were on the list I posted. Listening to my recording of that show now, I noticed that Beau Duran indirectly referenced the two postings above, right before playing "Another Night!" Earlier in the show, he also played another big Phoenix hit from the 90's -- Le Click "Tonight is the Night" -- which I failed to include on my list.

A couple other good ones for Movin' might be Bucketheads "The Bomb" and Mighty Dub Katz "Magic Carpet Ride" (Beau played a different Mighty Dub Katz song on Monday's show.)

Thanks, Beau - you're the BEST!

How was the sound quality on that phone/car setup?

I think 92.7/101.1 will go with the AAA format, and when 101.1 gets upgraded they may become a player. Trouble with a format like AAA for this station however is that if it gains any #s at all on 101.1 then one of the big players such as 98.7 or 101.5 will co-opt the format. That's the beauty of a niche like Energy, there's just no way a larger-signaled station would step into that area.

For now, nearly no-one will know about or seek out those two frequencies, the signals are just too weak unless you're airing an extreme niche like CHR/Dance or maybe a Chill format or something.

If anyone has the ability to record the stream today and record the final hours of Energy I would be very grateful. Very surreal today that Energy tomorrow morning will be a memory, a sad day indeed.

Wow I just happened to be listening at 8:28 Pacific, and "old school Hip-hop?" Really? lame... I mean, I love the old school hip-hop, but not very unique to be honest. Chances are they will run 80-90% gold for the first 6 months until they realize they can't sell it to 25-54 females (which I almost am positive is the target..) So then they shift slowly to a 50/30/20, currents/recurrents/gold format and go up against the other Rythmic's. I saw the same thing happen with our own MOViN format(s). Too bad.

How much more Hip Hop does Phoenix need, old or new??? Honestly.

Love the new format, but not at the expense of Energy. Too bad :'(
