Energy to be sold..per All Access

From R&R

KNRJ-FM/Payson (Phoenix)
PRICE: $3 million
BUYER: Independence Media Holdings LLC., headed by president/CEO David Jacobs. Phone: 469-619-1001. It owns six other stations. This represents its entry into this market.
COMMENT: Sierra H Broadcasting's KNRJ-FM/Payson, AZ to Independence Media Holdings' IM AZ Licenses for $3 million. $250,000 earnest money deposit plus the balance, payable in cash at closing.

I'd rather hear an active rock station again in Northern AZ. KUPD on a local frequency up here would be cool, like it was many years ago.

Dang, $3MM is all for a stick that reaches into the Valley of the Sun!!! WTF!!!

This is a very sad day for dance fans, but a hopeful day too. After all if that's all it costs to delve into such a large and expanding market albeit on very weak signals, there is GREAT hope for the future.

As for format it would be great if they kept it as is. They have a small but loyal core audience in the Valley that is much, much larger in number than any number they could hope to reach in Northern AZ with some mass appeal format that would simply copy something already heard in the Valley.

It doesn't reach the Valley all THAT well...therefore the need for the 92.7 translator. And in mono no less. If 101.1 gets to move to the same site as soon-to-be-former sister station KAJM, then we'll talk. I can now hear KAJM on my Walkman...

Independence Media on their website has pride in their engineering department. They have construction permits in Kentucky and Wyoming. Maybe they plan on moving the transmitter site. Their programming covers everything: spanish, sports, rock. No telling what will happen here.

For that to happen they'd have to change their COL and do some costly engineering study to prove non-interference. Could be done, but what do you wind up with? Another rimshot FM trying to serve an already overserved market! At $3m, the Nurse and I recommend the new owners find a way of making $$ within the current coverage area. It's a jungle out there!

any talk of a format change?

According to this, there will be no format Change with Energy, and also it appears there is a COL
in affect to move to Cordes Lakes, AZ.

it looks like the new Tower will be between on I-17 between Flaggstaff & Phoenix.

So if the Format is staying the same then why even sell it..??

A query on recnet site shows that an application was made in April to move the transmitter to Towers Mtn.

Interesting. I hope they end up changing it to rock or a great alternative station. They have two rock fans in the building as it stands, Rod and Beau.

The Radio-Online article says "No format change is expected." That's different than, say, "The format will not be changing". It leaves the door open

Besides that, I don't think it's standard practice for format changes to be announced when ownership changes occur. Why give any future competition time to prepare?

As for your question about why the station is even being sold - perhaps Independence Media feels that they can do a better job selling the Dance format than Sierra H has done.

As you all know I am a big fan of Energy but with the new ownership taking place, if I had my way I would do the following:

Move Pistol Pete to afternoons on Movin 97.5
Move H.E.A.D (High Energy After Dark) with Beau Durans to nights on Movin 97.5

Movin 97.5 could still keep the dance oldies format but can go new dance at night and weekends (satisfies the energy nation and would give them more of an appeal rather than just doing dance oldies 24/7)

92.7 and 101.1 become Buzz FM or something similar to it. Pretty much a guy talk, Free FM, Hot Talk format.

Mornings - Adam Carolla
Middays - Opie and Anthony
Early Afternoons - Don and Mike
Late Afternoons - BTLS (Bubba the love sponge)
Evenings - Tom Leykis
Overnights - John and Jeff

Easy format to do, 100% syndication and satisfies the disgruntled Free FM listeners who were abanoned last summer

I'm not sure if you know this (and if you do, my apologies), but this presumably means that 101.1/92.7 & 97.5 would need to be co-owned. They aren't. 97.5 is owned by Trumper, which is separate from both Sierra H & Independence Media.

And that raises another question - is the 92.7 translator included as part of the sale?

Yes I know 97.5 is not a part of the deal but I would say if the new owners want to get rid of the dance format, Movin would be smart to grab some of the Energy audience but adding some new dance at nights and weekends. Thats what I meant by my post.

Azenergyfan, while I haven't been a big fan of his, TRN is practically (and in 1 or 2 cases, literally) giving Mancow away in some large markets, banking that he'll do well in M25-49 and you'll pony up a bunch of cash next year. I'd rather go with this show over Carolla. And, yes, I do think this wouldn't be a bad format. What music options are left? More inventory to sell and garbage on the weekends.

BTW, did they buy the translator, too?

Yeah I am not a huge Cow fan either but that may be a good way to go too. Could also plug Carolla into another time slot of weekends if you could cut a deal with cbs radio.
