Engineer Tom Ray Leaving WOR New York

After 15 years, Tom is leaving to start his own consultancy. Under his watch, WOR was the first high-powered AM station to broadcast in HD.

Story link here.

Related: recently I've seen employment ads on the trade sites for a Clear Channel New York engineer - it's possible that the position is for WOR.

A couple of years ago I was chief engineer for BNR, a dutch news rsdiostation. I was in NYC to engineer a remote radioshow from the offices of a NY lawfirm. I visited WOR then and Tom gave me a tour around both the studios (I remember the Axia consoles) and the transmittersite. I loved every minute of it. He's a very nice person and a fantastic engineer.

It's sad that Buckley didn't offer to keep him as he's the only one who had WDRC-FM sounding good. There are few who have the engineering prowess that Tom does.

I don't think I met him back in my days with SBE Chapter 15 but I wish Tom the best of luck with his future endeavors.

It's not Buckley anymore...

I know, but Tom was D.E. for Buckley before the sale - Buckley could have kept Tom as their Director of Engineering and let Clear Channel's own engineering folks take on WOR.

Yeah. I bet there is a definite correlation between the new owners and his desire to branch out elsewhere. My guess is there's a huge difference between Buckley and CC. Looking from the outside I'd much rather be with Buckley....

So it's been said!

Tom is a good guy who knows his stuff. He'll do well with anything he takes on.

GOOD engineering guys that still want to work hard are in demand, and that demand is only going up. Between guys retiring and others getting feed up and changing industries, with few wanting to get into the business, he WILL do quite well :).

Importantly, Tom knows his AM stuff...and guys that meet that test are the rarest of the rare.
