Enhanced Listening Conditions ahead of storm front

Bill Shirk called this morning. he couldn't hear WIRE 91.1 and was hearing another station at his home. After I called the transmitter and it was on I called someone in Lebanon and they were hearing it.

My WR 1 Sangean was hearing 91.5 WJLR at I 70 therabouts. It is DA South! This is a tabletop radio without an external antenna.

Other things I heard very clearly

100.7 mix FM Terre Haute, 105.5 WBIW, WQRK or current calls at Bedford, WHCC 105.1 Elletsville, WITZ Jasper with a weather forecast, WKOA Lafayette over our local translator at 105.3, and many others. I have never heard Jasper at this location with an outdoor antenna. WHCC typically has a poor class A signal. Bedford is South of Bloomington a ways.

This happens during the summer many times, and ahead of a storm front a lot. Listen and enjoy.

maybe you can elaborate more on storms and reception Chief...a couple of weeks ago, during a storm front moving across Indiana, I rescanned my TV for stations off my antenna (I've got a Winegard HD-4400 UHF in my attic with a 30db amplifier on it, to help get weaker stations...) and I got for about an hour WLFI from Layfayette. What's amazing is I'm in Columbia City, and I would normally NOT get WLFI. Is that because the storm is a giant reflector for that signal and sends it east? Right now the antenna points almost due east but I'm going to make it point south soon (to try to catch some Indy signals if possible.)

odd but this phenomena continues. Our translator near Carthage is all but gone as WKOA is blasting here still. Still hearing some of the others as well. The system has stalled over the state according to weather folks.

That explains why I have been getting almost consistant reception on WSTO Evansville and WZKF Louisville here in martinsville for the past week... I like it when Tropo Bounces the signals around... But I can see why Engineers would hate this.

I have received several calls over the last two days saying our signal was being picked up out of our normal area. At the same time, a number of callers reported other stations bleeding into our area.

I figure it's either that evil global warming, or somehow Tom Berg's fault.

This tropo goes on from April till October every year.

Lomgtime Ham, short term bacon. Tropo like this is rare. Evenings and such is regular but daytime lasting a few days is infrequent. 1986 or 1987 had this happen and I lived in Evansville. I was able to check in to an Indy repeater with my IC2AT, 500 mw.

A few summers ago WIFE was doing a remote at the Connersville Fair and had a station out of Indiana capture the loudspeaker radio reportedly.

Sometime between 1980 and 1985 I was driving from Rochester,IN to Warsaw,IN to go to work at WRSW . Had my car radio tuned to 92.9MHZ thinking I was hearing WNDU-FM. Station I was actually hearing was a 92.9 MHZ station out of Denver,Co. It was rock solid the whole 30 minute drive to Warsaw. Heard commercials for Denver car dealers and banks. They were playing the same music that WNDU-FM did at that time. Hopefully people in Denver were hearing WNDU-FM.

I just wish that since 101.1 in Warsaw is down that I could get WRIF out of Detroit...a rock station of a different caliber.

Why is Warsaw off??

Since Chris passed away, the estate had been operating it. I believe they signed it off back in the spring sometime. As far as I know, WBZQ is still on.

The FM is off (101.1) but 1300 is still cranking out (needlessly) the Chicago Cubs games. ;D
