Enjoying HD Radio

It sure is good to hear Oldies 93 again, although not exactly the same it sure sounds good. And man, I didn't think i'd care for it, but Kiss-HD2 is AWESOME. Simon HD-2 is great, too, although it does prove that their main channel doesn't "play everything." haha

They should have imaging on Simon HD2 saying "we play everything ELSE."

haven't listened much to the other stations HD channels. i am disappointed there's nobody broadcasting AM in HD around here.

reception in the car is pretty good. i have lost signal a couple of times but not bad or often.

Check back in a month Amos....you will be bored to death. HD won't last because its not commercially viable. Bet on it.

Hourly is right. It's just like cable TV. Who would pay to watch tv???????? It's good to hear somebody saying that they are hearing HD radio. If only they worked at a retailer who sold them..."ummmmm...I think they's down there next to them Serious thangs."

Great post Amos as I am glad to hear someone else enjoying HD Radio. I put out a similar post in the Charlotte market a few weeks back and received very little excitement as well. You can just feel the death on these boards almost daily. I really like the format but the stations do need to advertise their HD station info more and let listeners know what they are actually playing on the sidebands. I bought a HD car radio a couple of months back and felt like a kid again with the option of new stations, and slightly better sound quality. I still love it as there are many HD stations in the Charlotte area even if they could do a better job of programming. Here from the Lake Norman area, I regularly receive 98.7 HD1, 104.1 HD1 & 105.7 HD1, 2 from the Triad. We have a few AMs in HD here and it does make listening more fun. Listening to Pac man from 610/1660 is more like listening on a FM station. I understand the noise interference this can cause AM at night, but see it as help for daytime AM. I personally think there is a lot of promise in HD radio on AM and FM, but understand the lack of real advertising (telling listeners what is being played on your HD2/3 stations) as well as the lack of local purchasing options. These two issues make HD's success a steep hill to climb. I did purchase my HD car radio from HH Gregg locally, but it would have been difficult to learn anything about it in the store if I hadn't known already. Still, I consider it a great purchase and love the format.

It's been a bit more than a month. I like it so much i bought another for car #2. I got the Visteon HD Zoom Radio HDZ300, a very inexpensive way to get HD reception.

WIsh we had AM HD in Raleigh, just so I could hear it. I don't have a car HD radio, but I've taken my Accurian to Charlotte and Washington, hoping to hear AM HD, but to no avail. I don't anticipate AM HD in Raleigh any time soon, if ever. We're behind the curve on FM HD, if it ever takes off.

Three years ago I was on a printing press startup in the Triangle area and noted one AM HDthat seemed local. It was somewhere in the 1200-1400 khz range, and it was a spanish language station, medium strong signal, so I figured it was Raleigh-Durham.
Wonder what happened to it?

For a while, there was talk of the government of requiring all radio stations to go digital like they are about to do with TV stations. Has that idea gone away?

It better have. I hear nothing but bad things about HD recepion.

I've heard the same thing about DTV reception. I have my coupons, and I'll be getting my boxes soon, but I hope the man was right that the indoor antenna is all I'll need. He actually claimed the outdoor antenna doesn't do as well as his indoor antenna, but I have my doubts. I live where I live and I'm not moving again. I've been happy (mostly) with my reception with rabbit ears. This thing the man showed me looked a lot like rabbit ears, though.

I suppose HD radio would work with the same kind of antenna. People who are having trouble maybe just don't have a good enough antenna.

HD radio reception isn't as good as the main channel reception, but around the triad the reception isn't bad. out away from town it does suffer, though.

DTV reception also depends, too. You're right about the antenna. An indoor antenna, no matter how good, can't match an outdoor antenna. But if you're in a strong signal area an indoor antenna may be all you need. The Zenith Silver Sensor is by far the best indoor antenna. However, it's uhf only. In some markets that's fine, but after Feb 17 here in the triad we also need a VHF antenna because WGHP is going back to channel 8.

Some UHF antennas have enough upper VHF pickup so that channels 7 - 13 may be picked up, but only if you're in a really good signal area. All the stations in the triad will be on UHF after feb 17 except for WGHP. I see that Channel Master has redesigned their 4228 antenna, making it now a channel 7-69 antenna. Perfect for DTV.

Where do you live? If you get a strong analog signal with an antenna (indoor or outdoor) it's almost 100% that you'll get a good digital signal too with the same antenna you use now. What antenna are you using now?

WGHP will return to Ch 8 after the Transition. They are currently on RF 35. They were one of the few stations that opted to return to their original channel - I think a station is New Bern is doing the same thing. Only Hi-VHF channels were eligible (7-13).

WGHP has duplicate transmitter/tower sites - 2 towers / 4 transmitters.

Initially they were going to move on to the Pappas Tower; but when FOX bought them, they pulled out. FOX doesn't like to be subject to technical issues that occur on shared tower sites.

Their engineer posted on another board that it was economics that drove them to move their digital to channel 8. Just the power bill on VHF will be much lower. A Low VHF station wouldn't move back, even if they could, because of interference that would plague the digital signal.

antennaweb.org shows the channel assignments both pre and post feb 17, 2008. WGHP is the only triad station that will be on VHF, but in Atlanta, both WXIA and WGTV will be on VHF. WXIA is on 10 now, and staying there (their analog RF is 11), and WGTV is moving back to channel 8.

HDTV - does anybody really watch Over-The-Air anymore? Sure cable and satellite compress the heck out of the signal - degrading a 1920x1080i to 1100x1080i. The consumer can't see the difference; especially when you tell them they can get a better signal if they get an outside antenna and antenna rotor.

Found out this week that WCWG-DT is at half-power since last month and no one knew/complained/heard.

Fact is, quite a few stations are moving back to their old VHF analog channel come Feb. 19. In addition to WGHP, WTVD will be going back to 11. WSPA will go back to 7, as will WLOS go back to 13. In addition to WCTI returning to 12, WNCT will stay on channel 10. In SC, WIS will return to 10, and WBTW will return to 13. SCETV stations WNTV and WHMC will both keep their digital transmitters on 9---and WITV will return to 7. WOLO will stay on 8, creating problems for WGHP. WTVI is stupidly staying on 11 after the transistion. In VA, WSET is returning to 13 and WBRA is staying on 3. Yes, the lower VHF channels are available for use as digital channels after 2/19, and most stations are avoiding them if they can due to terrible interferrence problems. I'm not sure I've caught all he stations that are staying on VHF in this region--if I've missed any let me know. In the meantime, don't throw away your VHF antenna just yet...

Whats does this have to do with HD Radio?

Only that HD tv is true High Definition. HD radio is a scam! Plain and simple.
People in radio are getting so excited about having an extra channel but not many can program the one they have.
As far as from a listener's point of view,.. just get Satelitte radio, way more extra channels there.
