Firstly, is http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/10/16/1144958/-Big-Trouble-in-Limbaugh-Land an accurate assessment of Clear Channel's financial condition?

If it is, why did they buy WHBA?

Even after 30 years in this business there are aspects of it that still puzzle me, and this is one such.

That's a very biased article with some real misleading lines in it.

However, the numbers are accurate. If you want to see some REALLY scary numbers, take a look at Cumulus.

You'd almost get the impression that the agency blackballing of "controversial" talk-show hosts was something that reared its head right after the Sandra Fluke tirates. In fact it's been going on for years, if not decades. When Howard Stern and Opie & Anthony were on terrestrial radio, those shows ran up against the exact same brick wall. When Don Imus was on WNBC they had the same problem too, and that one goes back 40 years.

This is just the KosKids' way of taking a shot at both Romney and Limbaugh at the same time, which requires the audience to 1. believe that Romney was running Bain when Bain and Thomas Lee Partners bought CC, and 2. that advertisers being wary of opinion radio is something new.

I believe the Clintonistas used to call this kind of stuff "boob bait for the bubbas." Expect more of it as desperation sets in with the Obamans.

I agree that it's probably wishful thinking. But it does all come down to the bottom line. If Rush costs stations more than Huckabee...and by "cost" I mean net revenue (gross profits less expenses)...then they'll probably make the jump. Not if it's close, probably, but if it's demonstrably more fiscally beneficial to go with Huckabee, why wouldn't they?
