Enough Leno/Conan Talk... Who will get Letterman's Seat???

Since I've got Leno/Conan burnout... Let's discuss who's gonna take over for Letterman when he retires/dies/gets fired or whatever.

Jon Stewart? But will Craig Ferguson be ticked off if that happens?

Stephen Colbert?

Maybe even Conan?

How about a return of the CBS Late Movie? LOL. Here's a gem:

I vote for the movie. ;)

The Ferg-ster is an employee of Lettermans. I am sure if he wants it, he would get it. I had read awhile back an article on Craigie, that he wants to work through the rest of his contract and go back to writing, directing and producing movies. But who knows, he could change his mind and stay if he wants to lose one of the 'Late' words in his current shows title.

I seriously doubt Letterman will be fired anytime soon, especially up against Leno.

However, Kent, an interesting twist on the late night debate. Ferguson would seem to be the likely successor, kinda like the VP taking over for the President if he couldn't execute the oath of office. BUT, I would not rule out CBS reaching into the cable ranks, either Colbert, or perhaps Stewart.

One thing is for certain, the format is still strong and will likely be with us for many years and decades to come.

Oh, and Kent could you please confirm that you are NOT the real Harry Shearer? Some of your posts seem quite "inside"...just curious :)

Conan will take over for Letterman on Memorial Day, 2014.

Oh, wait.

In Brockman voice: "This esteemed reporter will never reveal his sources." ;)

Hmm...sounds like a Harry Shearer response...do we have a true celeb in our midst here on radio-info? If so, NICE! Of course, we will never know for sure. I guess we will have to keep watching for KentBrockman posts! 8)

I predict that in a court settlement Robert "Joe" Halderman will become the new host of Late Night in a plea deal he will make with the court and Letterman.

I could see a scenario in which Leno regains the lead over Letterman at 11:35, at which point, Dave announces that Conan would replace him at some point. How's that for karma?

And welcome Harry Shearer to the board! ;)

Now that Letterman and Ferguson are signed through 2012, there won't be much movement too soon. I've heard Ferguson say that he's on board until Letterman leaves...then he's done too. So, wouldn't it be fun to see Letterman pay homage to his longtime friend and mentor Johnny Carson by reintroducing the concept of the guest host on Monday nights -- and welcoming Conan back to late night. THEN, announcing that Conan will be heir apparent to Dave, whenever that may be.

Not sure there's a snowballs chance in h*ll of this happening, but it would make waves for sure!

So if Ferguson leaves when Letterman leaves, CBS will be screwed! They will have to find a way to get Jon Stewart over to CBS before they bale. Get Carson Daly for LLS (Kidding)

Maybe we shouldn't be married to the one-hour chat-and-skit format that current network talk shows have. Comedy Central's The Daily Show and The Colbert Report do well with half the time and no house bands in either show. It's not that unthinkable that CBS (or any broadcast net) shakes up the talk format to be cheaper/more profitable long-term. There's no rule that says you 'must' have two shows in those two hours, you know.

Perhaps one marquee show at 11:35 ET (the Late Show carried on by whomever) and two cheaper comedy projects to fill out the 12:35-1:35 hour?

If that is you, Harry - just wanted to say I've been a fan of your work since The Credibility Gap on KRLA radio...starting about (gasp) 40 years ago. I even saw the Gap's live comedy show at LA's Ash Grove nightclub (I think) about 1971. If I remember correctly, some unknown singer named Bonnie Raitt opened for you...but that could be just my memory.

If you're just some guy borrowing the name of esteemed anchor/reporter Kent Brockman...never mind.

Letterman leaves CBS when he wants to leave CBS.
CBS loves Letterman although he produced years of lackluster ratings against Jay from almost an entire decade. But they respect him as a piece of CBS.
But it seems that Ferguson wouldn't want to do the Late Show because he wants to do his style of a more freeform show than what Letterman is doing.
But Conan on CBS? Not likely. It seems that he's the only person who can ever be a replacement for someone on Late Night now huh? Especially after years of "fantastic" ratings right?

Conan is funnier on his Twitter account than Leno is on The Tonight Show. I would love to see Conan take over for Letterman if Dave left.

Don't forget that whole "sleeping with the interns" thing... I guess CBS forgives him for that, too...

Apart from knowing that Leno was #1 all those years, I didn't really follow the late night ratings. Are you sure Letterman's ratings were"lackluster," or are you just saying that because he was #2? CBS is the number 1 network in overall ratings after all, and they seemed satisfied with Dave.

Being "#1" gives the network bragging rights and brings in more revenue, but its not the only consideration. As the TV audience becomes more fractured with more choices, I think the networks are less concerned with being #1 in any time slot, as long as the ratings are healthy and bring in good demographics for advertisers.

Even back in the late 60s- early 70s, The Dick Cavett Show was a relative success for a few years on ABC. The show was different (more "intellectual"), attracted a successful high-income demographic, and created a lot of buzz. But Cavett's ratings were never even close to Carson's.
