Enough of the FM..what about AM?

Mr. Marbles,

I wanted to let you know I appreciate your new-found interest in AM radio and the vast wealth of knowledge that folks on radio-info have to tap. Jo Jo Kracko sounds pretty wise about these things, especially about WSYB. If you're making inquiries on the development of any AM station, you probably have no better resource for honest opinions than here, (even if they don't agree with each other some times, lol).

Just so you know, we're all here to help you out in any way we can. Just try to return the favor whenever you can. :)

You know, Mr. M, just thinking, perhaps you should ask the Sports Director his thoughts and input on the subject, since your desicsion will have impact one way or the other. He probably has much more knowledge than you on the subject of tape delays, while you have the possible tools and options in your group of stations to arrive to a agreeable solution

jo jo, i don't believe we even have a sports director here yet? any good suggestions? ???

I think that tape delay is perfectly fine.

Mr. JMarbles...I would tend to think local live sports would out sell any pro team. Local sporting events brings in clients that don't normally advertise. Especially the big games. It makes complete sense to blow off the pro team and run the local team live...or put it on a different signal OR run the local game on the other signal. Running the local sports gives the local station credibility as a "community minded" station. Tape delaying a local game only upsets the local listeners PLUS part time advertisers will be more hesitant to spend dollars on a taped local event.

Why not run the local game live and THEN run replays of the game for thos who didn't get a chance to hear it? Better programming, I think, than some moron from Fox Sports or ESPN rambling on about the Cardinals..right?

Most definately talk to the sports director Mr. M...You sound like a novice at the AM thing...ask the pro!

Wow, a 50kw AM in VT. Probably will cover most, if not all of the state by day. Have to think that 50kw would have a mostly north / south day pattern to protect a lot of 680's around and maybe even 690 on Montreal to an extent, as well as the 670 clear channel in Chicago. 300 watts at night, probably won't even hit Burlington.

There's a NIMBY problem (locals didn't want the towers to be built) but Bob Vinikoor had wanted to build a 50kW signal on 720 in Hanover NH, too.
(Going way back to '01:
http://www.fybush.com/NERW/011126/nerw.html

"The New Hampshire Supreme Court agreed this week to accept Bob Vinikoor's appeal of a lower court ruling that upheld the city of Hanover's decision not to allow Vinikoor to build three towers for WQTH (720 Hanover)... If it's built, by the way, WQTH will be the most powerful station in New Hampshire, with a 50 kW daytime signal."

http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?call=WQTH&x=0&y=0&sr=Y&s=C
Radio-locator lists WQTH as "currently off the air", licensed to Clarement, with 50kW day,
50kW critical hours, and 670 watts at night. Note that the CP expires on June 13! Though maybe there's a way he can get it renewed, if that's allowed?

I agree with Jo Jo Kracko that a 50,000 watt daytime signal would boom in all over north Vermont, New York,
New Hampshire and even southern Quebec and maybe all the way into Montreal Metro area. But if it interferes
with INFO 690 the former CBF French Broadcasting frequency ( they moved to 95.1 FM ) then there's a problem
if this new 670 AM gets on the air and where there towers are and if the daytime pattern is non directional.
300 watts at night would not even hit Burlington probably as far as St Mikes to the west, Lang Farm at night.
I remember when WJOY and WDOT Burlington where 250 watts full time and barely covered Burlington.

WOW!! 50,000watts of am? don't tempt me...the great houdini has some tricks that have yet to be known my students :-*

Kracko loves the idea of HD radio, ahh the possibilities... Mr. Marbles, what would be your take on a station like, WSYB, which you seem to be familair with. Wouldn't it be great to have SYB' available on an a 97.1-2 channel or something like that. There's an upgrade to 50kw right there.

ahhhhh!! THE GREAT HOUDINI has them talking....well jo jo, not to familiar with wsyb, but "if it can be done...let it be done" -Paul H. Ginsbarg
p.s. Dudeman2000 you should know that a magician never reveals his trick!! ;)

Mr. Marbles, perhaps you can enlighten us to your situation since we are at the understanding that you are attempting to program some sort of AM news/talker with a heavy dose of a local and national sport commitment..

jo jo, that my friend is in the next chapter...i hope you read the cliff notes, because THE GREAT HOUDINI will be showing you a thing or two on this board...take notes from the springfield wizard!!! :-*
p.s. Jo Jo Cracko..what do you think of the Prophet automation system?...I hear it's a real HOT ROD?!!! ???

OK, We'll be listening, as they say.... Kracko has heard and witnessed nothing but positives with Prophet.

Prophet? Hmmm...let me guess Professor Marbles...you have a couple stations that now use it and you will be switching the others in your group over soon? Many clues...
