ENTERCOM ASSUMES KBLX CONTROL TUESDAY; STEVE HARVEY TO MORNINGS

Well, what was known as "The Quiet Storm" is gone, and is now "R&B 102.9, The New KBLX". BAH! Longtime listeners have been VERY livid about the sudden overnight tweaking, losing Kevin Brown (the heart and soul of the station) and Antoine Davis (female listeners are crying) to firing, and are fighting to keep Harvey off. The new imaging of the station is nothing but a carbon copy of any so-called R&B station in Atlanta, Houston, D.C., Detroit, Chicago, Philly and Miami. Unless Entercom gives in and stops putting millions a year in the big suit pockets and invest that in Kevin Brown and other local talent instead, KBLX will go the way of KDIA and KSOL. And KISQ will never play new R&B from the likes of India Arie, Eric Benet, Kem or Musiq, plus KMEL only plays R&B for three hours at night.

At least KMEL will never take on Rickey Smiley. *side eye* They even dropped Big Tigger's countdown years back anyway (the other CC and CBS stations still got it).

"The Quiet Storm" was just a slogan, not a format. The slogan has existed through what were basically 4 format changes over the years.

Yeah, this one thing I gave up to this market as of recent, all of its urban stations (KMEL, KISQ, and KBLX) remained 'live and local' aside from the syndicated Sunday morning gospel shows. I applauded KMEL for dumping "Live in the Den" because nobody really listens to this show in most major markets. Major urban stations like WVEE/Atlanta, WPGC/Washington are just stuck with the show because of CBS urban/rhythmic radio division VP Reggie Rouse exclusively produces it. I've yet to figure why KPRS/Kansas City keeps it on air. It's basically a "time filler" like the Nick Cannon's Countdown, but a time waster nevertheless.

By the way, the diversity of KBLX has also been compromised. There are no local Black men personalities anymore.

I guess Doug Lee is gone too since its sounds like it will be jockless on the weekends for now. Victor in the afternoon should be very entertaining. He did a good job at KHHT in the morning. As long as they play Urban music Im okay. Right now the stream in down on my Tune Inn app. Entercom just added the station to its streaming network via the website. Hopefully the audio will be better.

Most Radio One hip hop stations, if not all, run On the Air with Russ Parr on the weekends. This includes the stations that still have him, the ones that never have affiliated with his weekday morning show, the ones that switched over to Rickey Smiley, and the ones that still retain a local AM drive (KBXX Houston and WCKX Columbus). I find it peculiar given R1's special agreement with AURN.

The Walt Baby Love Countdown is a distant memory, let alone Gospel Tracks.

Entercom uses the StreamTheWorld platform, thus...

Direct streaming URLs (copy/paste into media player):

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/KBLXFMAAC.pls 128 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo AAC
http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/KBLXFM.pls 128 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo (for non-AAC players)
http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/asx/KBLXFM.asx 128 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo (for Windows Media player + non-AAC players)

The previous abacast higher quality stream was 64 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo AAC.

I remeber when KPRS added the show in 2001. It was refreshing hearing Hip Hop on Sunday nights on that station. That was right around the time Sam Weaver left KPRS. Before that it was Blues and Jazz which made radio very boring in KC on Sundays. I havent listen to the show in years im shocked its still on the air too.

Yeah, I understand about how boring it could have been, but the thing is as a full-service urban. The Sunday jazz and blues made completed the circle on music considering KMJK doesn't show any dedication towards playing towards either genre during the weekends at all.

Well KMJK made changes after Smoth Jazz KCIY flipped to Country. KMJK always had Gospel on Sundays. Shortly after they added Smooth Jazz from 1-3pm then Classic Soul Sunday with Dell Rice would kick off until 7pm. After Cumulus layed off most of Magic's weekend staff both shows are gone. But still radio improved somewhat back home.

I kinda figured Entercom was gonna make cuts. You look at most of their markets they only have 1 or 2 parttimers or none on the weekends. They are looking for a new PD so hopefully whoever they hire I wish them the best success.

Another change to the station is replacing the voiceover (still can't figure his name) and the jingle bumpers for the generic bumpers with the typical sound effects and a new voiceover who does imaging announcements for Cumulus streaming radio (replacing local ad cut ins).

"Also AFTRA again folds like a cheap card table to Entercom..."
"They said to SAG~AFTRA don't worry...then broke up the CBA at KBLX, now this...."
"By the way, the diversity of KBLX has also been compromised. There are no local Black men personalities anymore..."

The American Federation Of Television And Radio Actors, AFTRA has a remarkably consistent record in doing practically nothing for those in the radio side of broadcasting, don'tcha think?.

This is supposed to be the broadcaster's union, not the station cluster's puppet. AFTRA shares jurisdiction of radio, television, Internet and other new media with its sister union SAG, but their record is spotless. They have done nothing for their radio members.

Except collect dues.

They were always too busy chasing after the larger slice of TV dollars than the radio portion, never mind that they have religiously paid dues to this Union throughout the years.

AFTRA's inefficiency for it's radio membership here in the Bay Area, KBLX and KOIT being only the latest in their membership to discover the tissue-thin weakness of their tenuous backup, has been going on for decades. As a radio performer's "partner," AFTRA in San Francisco (and L.A., BTW) was never really very good at supporting them. Their lawyers are kindergarten level guppies splashing in a pool of sharks, gladly giving up territory in order to save their personal status.

And, of course, they're worse now. Decades of incompetence? Most certainly; check the records. But before pointing fingers, if you have any left, keep in mind: when the sheep are that willing to look the other way, they are equally to blame for their own demise. A union is only as good as its participating members.

By now, AFTRA's failed attempts to create any sense of security or support for its members in the areas of contract negotiation and enforcement, advocacy, lobbying, legislation and public policy issues have not only reflect the timid nature of its members...not only accrued an enormous losing streak... but, like a bowler with a runaway hooking arc, have developed a reliable losing, downhill momentum. And completely lost the faith of its collective family.

The weak and disgraceful AFTRA record of inability to stand up for its radio rank and file, of buckling to the higher fears and fees, dates well back into the previous century. The organization itself should by now be considered the shame of the AFL-CIO, the International Federation of Journalists, the International Federation of Actors and radio broadcasters everywhere, especially here in the San Francisco Bay Area where their union has initiated virtually nothing in service of its constituents.

Thanks to the pioneering efforts of earlier members, those who were able to join at least 35 years ago, do some enjoy relatively good, although uneven, health benefits which, while being constantly pecked at, still stand. No new gains in years though, and you can bet there won't be many new union members.

Good luck with your dentistry.
