Entercom Becoming Desperate?

Sure sounds like they're getting desperate to me. Putting WWL on 3 stations! Are they out of ideas for formats for the other stations they bought up when they blew into town like big shots? Has the pig with so many stations run out of format food? Now what?

And then the payoff...you turn on the big offering...their ** 3 ** WWL stations and hear...Bob Mitchell.

They sound like they're in REAL trouble to me. I predict a market exit for Entercom in 2007. Their stations are all spinning out of control.

I think it may be the big 3 right now because apparently some broadcasters are abandoning air america due to it's shaky financing and advertisers that are refusing to air commercials on air america.

Now it's to see what entercom will do with the frequency.. The PT1350 website is down, and the logo hasn't been changed on the WWL site so it may be them using WWL as a place holder for now?

I noticed there was no mention of Bob Mitchell on "WWL On Demand". Is the writing on the wall, pal? You have to love all of Entercom's original ideas. The latest, "WWL, as New Orleans as..." Maybe something the cuntsultants brought to the table. Isn't that something Joseph Costello used on WRNO in it's heyday? Now, the overpaid minds are stealing from the dead people.

Hello WWWL!!! From today's Times-Picayune:

http://www.nola.com/search/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-0/116322847624040.xml?ELVTV&coll=1

This whole idea of broadcsting the same crap on three stations is a pretty stupid idea to me. Isn't this the type of thing that the FCC was trying to keep from happening back when they had ownership limits? So much for deregulation. What's next? WWL broadcasting on five satellite radio channels? Since they keep saying that they are trying to give the listeners what they want, which is the ability to hear the shows and get the information that they need when they want it, why not give out all the show host's personal phone numbers.? Talk about radio on demand !

This idea is way overboard in my opinion. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

As I see it, the bottom line is that these little piggies bought all these stations, and now are frankly out of ideas and don't know what to do with them.

I predict they'll be gone from the market in 2007. Awwwwwww.

xmguy,

your way off course. wwl desperate? give me a break! they are stronger than ever. why three stations? first off THEY CAN. more importantly, listeners demanded it. they were complaining that they wanted to hear certain shows but were at work, etc. this way people get a chance to hear shows at different times. ratings and billing through the roof, importance of station through the roof, power through the roof, supposed competitor tells whole market their plans 8 months ago....i'm not sure but it sounds like you have a beef with wwl as what you have posted is completely wrong.

No Marconi, son, I have no beef at all with WWL. READ. The post I made was about ENTERCOM. I have the utmost respect for WWL's programming now and through the years, with the exception of a handfull of choices of personalities that I, as a listener, consider weak. Get the burr out of your a*s. I'm commenting just on what I see overall and I still say ENTERCOM is out of format ideas for their bloated sack of stations. And I still think they're gonna be gone next year.

Read the headline on my previous post again. Then read my comment. Understand it now? Now go on the levee and fly your WWL flag somewhere else and stay on topic if you want to post.

A quote of Ken Beck from Dave Walker's article on NOLA.com...
"This is a better choice based on what audiences and advertisers are telling us."
Listen? When have they EVER listened. Save us the concerned big brother attitude. We know what's good for you to listen to. Now, they get to jack up the rates and force feed their programming on the public. You'll listen & like it. Plus, a great cost cutting measure.

Yeah, like "6 on your side...we listen to YOU". What a truckload of lies and bullcrap.

ok xmguy,

no need to be so hostile. this is a discussion board...SON!
ease up on your aggression. you want me to stay on topic? ok, you predict Entercom will leave the market in the next year? ok, now i know your nuts. ratings dominance, revenue dominance, unchallenged formats...are you sure you know what your talking about? are you one to really break down a station's perfromance? i don't think so. Magic 101.9..ratings killer and revenue killer, others have tried to compete and have gone down. Bayou? soon to be the ONLY rock station in the market, also killing in revenue and W & J are stronger than ever. B97? Once again, people have tried to take them on over and over and failed, also excelling at ratings and revenue. WWL is a monster and proved itself to be a true resource during Hurrican Katrina. To say they are running out of ideas is ignorant. WWL was a lifeline for people during the storm and a resource for people after the storm. People want to hear the programs and they don't always get to. This way they can on another AM station that never had great ratings. Make sense to me. Have a nice day and lighten up. It's only a radio discussion board. I don't agree with everything corporate radio companies do in this town but your comments about them leaving are simply wrong from a business standpoint. once again, have a great day and stop the hate!

whatever about my english. i could really care less. the fact of the matter is your thoughts and opinions are slanted and wrong. if you really knew what was going on in the market you would know that entercom is crushing everyone right now. where do you get off predicting they would leave the market? they are having a field day. you can get hostile in your reply as i know it makes you feel better. i won't say anything else as the topic is getting boring as your posts are completely wrong. just relax. that's why this board is here. i don't have to agree with everything you say especially when you are completely wrong. take it easy and really think about what you are posting first. thank you and have a great day.

Is Entercom dominating? You bet, by default. WWL is on top because of the storm and sports. LSU and the Saints are money in the bank. This area breathes football. Take away those two ingredients and they are average. They could put other syndicated programs on ‘SMB but “On Demand” doesn’t cost them a dime and doesn't take away from WWL’s ratings. But to spin it off they're bowing to the wants of the listeners, as in Dave Walker's article, is a joke. Advertisers have no other avenue dump their dollars for adult demos.

If Clear Channel only had the onions to flip, it would be a different story for news/talk. They probably wouldn’t take them over in the ratings but they would put a dent in their revenue. Entercom’s music stations are in the same boat, all going after white adults with the exception of B97. Company wide, they only have two urban stations, in Austin and Norfolk. So, they just write off the black listeners.

The last competition Magic had was Lite 105 is the early 90’s. They weren’t the rating killers back then. Bayou is doing well simply because of W&J, period. The other day-parts are marginal at best. You can’t call ‘RNO competition because CC is keeping the frequency warm if and when they flip. Both are playing the same 300 songs over and over. Magic looks like they picked up the Kool 95 listeners. What else do they have to listen to? WTIX-FM? And you can’t believe they think that’s anything to worry about. B97 is no ratings giant, in the 4’s on an average. Bottom line, until somebody sinks some money into their properties, Entercom will sit on top and count their money. In the mean time, the listeners suffer. There’s no entertainment value to get them excited. The corporate mentality is “show me the bottom line”. Spend as little as possible on content. Piss on the listener. Case in point, you can look at Citadel too. Three formats that add up to a 4.5 in the fall book and don’t attempt to improve content or make a serious run.

Bottom line, radio in New Orleans will continue suck in the coming year. The so-called programmers will continue to justify their existence by keeping the budgets at barebones while they scoop in their bonuses. In the meantime, save your change and invest in XM or Sirius. One day, they’ll get it….NOT! Somebody get some onions.

bayoub,

there's quit a bit i agree with in your post.

2 quick things, Magic's last competition was Lite 92.3. B-97 is a rating killer in the 18-34 Male and Female demos as well as 12-17.
Rock radio is a joke, no doubt. I hear the same two songs back to back on different days on Bayou and WRNO. The smell playlists are sad. Bender's "Under the Covers" was the coolest thing on vorporate FM radio.
It surprises me that no one has had the "onions" to do anything.

:-X Right you are my friends. And, there's exactly one individual you can thank for the systematic takedown of these stations: KEN BECK. Sad, but true. I happened to catch the end of the Wizard of Oz just the other night, and remember that famous part near the end where the "great and wonderful wizard" turned out to be really no one special at all, with no special powers, no greatness of any kind??Just a fake?? Well, that's good ol' KB. WWL AM/FM has been without a VP/GM since Katrina hit and Beck has stepped in to make WWL radio his own persoal plaything, and he royally f*ed it up. The ops mgr isn't much better, since all she does is say "Yes Mr. Beck, whatever you say Mr. Beck" (never thinks for herself, desperately holding on to her job).... :'(

So now there's an ops mgr over the cluster? Does this mean the music pd's have been spayed and neutred? Wasn't KB to be a temporary GM? Either corporate could care less about the city and looking to get out, no one wants the job permanently or you can add KB to the list of no-talent, corporate puppets because he there for the duration? Interesting...see what the first of the year brings.

well i hope santa clause brings his big bag of goodies! and in that big bag of goodies, we'll see a train load of pink slips for kb, mike kaplan, and the rest of the lackluster puppets. and new, well-talented people come in. ones with LOTS of creativity, etc...... well...... i might be wishing too hard.

Sorry everyone -- I must have hit the wrong button when I was trying to post a comment yesterday...what I was trying to say is that...there's one person and one person only when it comes to the apparent plight of WWL radio and the other stations owned by Entercom in the New Orleans area: [b}KEN BECK[/b]. He has used WWL radio as his own personal plaything ever since Katrina blew through here over a year ago. There is NO VP/GM at the helm, he left for greener pastures and did not stick around for the big 'rebuilding'. So you can thank ol' Ken Beck for anything and everything that has changed with WWL radio, including the ridiculous duplication of efforts (simulcasting). However, they still do have an Operations Manager, in name only, since the only thing she does is say "Yes Mr. Beck, whatever you say"..and has managed to systematically run the station into the ground, getting rid of all the halfway decent (or better) news/talk staff they had, and the best of what they currently have are barely hanging on, suffereing daily abuse at the unclean hands of the aforementioned individuals.. And God, please don't get me started on their news director from Hell. More to come...stay tuned! :-X
