Watch out for probably more Spanish stations in South Carolina.


Entercom Sells Greenville, SC Trio
To Davidson

The privately held Davidson Media Group, which owns 23 stations nationwide, has emerged as the buyer of Entercom's Christian AC simulcast WOLI & WOLT and nonrated Christian Taker WSPA-AM in the Greenville-Spartanburg market. Davidson is purchasing the trio for $6.7 million, and the deal leaves Entercom with News/Talk simulcast WORD & WYRD, CHR/Pop WFBC and AC WSPA-FM in the market. Many of Davidson's properties air Spanish-language and Gospel formats, and the company specializes in targeting large minority communities in the markets where it owns stations. Kalil & Co. served as the broker for this transaction.
 
Wow, WSPA is South Carolina's first radio station. What will happen to Bill Drake and this legendary station?

Unfortunately for 910, the market outgrew its signal. Sad to see it fade out to niche programming. WJMX, WTMA, and WVOC (former WIS-AM) are still around.

Before it outgrew it, Entercom shrank it. Until a few years ago, WSPA-AM was at 950, a better signal. They swapped with WORD to enhance the WORD/WYRD combo because that is the more valuable franchise and they knew they wouldn't have WSPA-AM for much longer.

Just a thought...Davidson specializes in Hispanic and Gospel. Maybe Hispanic for the 103's...Gospel on 910, in which case they could keep Drake. He did a gospel show on Sunday mornings on WSPA years ago.

Could be. We do know for sure that the walk format is moving to WGVC even if it hasn't been announced publicly. If you want to know anything about Entercom, just know what bars to hang out in. They'll tell you anything if you're buying. It's expensive though. Those folks can drink!

Exactly who did you find that out from? Is this something confirmed or a rumor? Honestly, I'd take 89.3 anyday before this "Walk". I would rather hear OLDIES on 106.3 and GOSPEL on 89.3.

You're kidding right? All I can tell you is that I heard if from someone in a position to know and is convinced it is the current plan. Maybe it will change.

that I don't know. I could probably get someone who knows to tell me what walk bills but then how would we know what oldies bills? i see where you're going with this. If oldies bills more why not keep it..................

According to my handy-dandy KAGAN book, WOLI/WOLT Billed $400k last year, while WGVC Billed $1.7M. Personally, I can't imagine why on earth anyone would switch Oldies for the Walk format. There are already plenty of christian voices in the market, and the traditional commercial business model just doesn't seem to work for the format. But, I've most certainly given up on trying to predict what the big boys will do!

Woah! How can 400k even pay the power bill at The Walk? I don't see why they would move something with a 400k billing to a 25k signal. This will be interesting to see after all sales are finalized.

If all stays on schedule, the move of The Walk to 106.3 happens in August.

So, when/if Oldies goes, what about WBZT 96.7 flipping to Oldies? It would be a good choice, they don't do great between The Planet and Rock101. Plus the limited signal.

Not likely. There's no future in Oldies. There was no Oldies station when WBZT signed on, and CC passed on the format then.

$400k is not a lot of money at all for a market the size of Greenville. However, it will most definitely pay the bills with a little left over. Since both 103 signals are Class-A, the power bill is probably not much more than $1,500 a month.

I can't hear 106.3 here in Asheville, so I have no idea how much actual live content they have, or what kind of airstaff they employ. However, being a cluster-mate to two other stations, the overhead is probably much less than you'd imagine. With billing of $1.7M, they should have plenty of cash-flow, albeit not nearly as much as the other major players in the market.

As much as I do like Oldies, it seems to be on it's last leg. Then again, how many folks who are in that demo like to be called 'old'? Maybe we should think about evolving the format into something that has a better name...anyone up for "Classic AC"?

As I've said before, I gave up on second-guessing the big boys a long time ago. I like playing in little markets much better!

One thing I haven't heard is whether or not Davidson plans to LMA the stations until the paperwork goes through. Have I missed something?

If an LMA were in place, my guess would be that the formats would switch almost immediately. My prediction: Regional Mexican on the FMs, with time-brokered gospel on the AM.

The question is, can Greenville support 2 Spanish FMs? They could possibly put Spanish on 103.3, simulcast on 910, and Gospel on 103.9.

I enjoy Oldies 106.3 very much. They play some stuff from the late 70s but still play some classics from the 50s and early 60s. This will be interesting to see after all of the sales close, what will happen.

What a good idea...although supporting the two FM signals wouldn't necessarily be the same as supporting two separate stations, it could bolster the revenue for the gospel format if they put it in an FM. And, the national trends show that Hispanic listeners do not mind listening to AM. Of course, who knows what formats they will end up with when the dust settles. I can't imagine Davidson doing anything apart from Hispanic and Gospel, though.

What is the playlist like on Oldies 106.3? Is it more Sixties- or Seventies-based?

Heavily focused on the mid-to-late 60s. They play a 50s song occasionaly and an early 60s song maybe once or twice an hour. They also play traditional 70s songs you hear on an Oldies station today. They have a wide variety of stuff in the playlist.
The only 80s tracks I've EVER heard is "Kokamo" by The Beach Boys and "Nightshift" by the Commodores.
