Yes it was, 94.9 is only open for a translator

Hence why I said "bribe" within my joke, as it is the only way a 94.9 would be allowed in Philly (unless 94.9 was established many many years ago, it could have been grandfathered in like 97.5)

Sometimes there could be tropo or e-skip and there would be something on 94.9. And in the past, the dance pirate in Trenton was on 94.9 for a while.

Realisiticly, 94.9 is the only thing that in the entire Philly area you normally won't find anything on. There is a high school station broadcasting on it, but there was on 107.9 before it became a Class A FM.

On 98.5 I DX the Peak quite often...
92.9 I get Tom from Dover
105.7 is clear but if you had much further south from Marcus Hook it just completely turns into that CBS sports fm.

The most clear stations in Philly are 87.7 and 94.9 - followed by 107.3 and 99.7

Radio Locator recommends 91.5 as a good 'empty' frequency near me for microtransmitters which it probably is, but I get WBJC from Baltimore clearly most of the time, and WDBK occasionally. That's due to my altitude and a clear view south. Yet Class A 'Tom' on 92.9 and WJZ-FM on 105.7 are rarely received. And on the relatively empty 96.9, I can clearly hear W245AG, a WBMR translator from Roxborough, but no W246AQ (WXHL) from 1 Liberty (or is it PSFS?). Your mileage may vary.

Strange DX yesterday - I was in down in Kennett, where WPEN usually comes in poorly, sitting in Wendys, flipping stations to see if 98rock was coming in, when I scanned HFS (97.5 Baltimore Translator) - I recieved HFS 97.5 with little to no static.

Nope not possible. that's probably pointing tward WOGL's transmitter too.
I have narrow filters in a lot of my tuner and even that doesn't get the IBOC static to go away.
Never got 98-rock even before HD started broadcasting.

John, what are you using for a receiver?

Before I replaced my roof I had a Channel Master Probe 9 hooked up to a Pioneer TX-9500 tuner (used from Barracks - had to clean up some serious coffee/soda gunk, but it was a great unit for the $40 I paid.) I could get much of the southern Delaware FMs and Baltimore on a good day (91.5 WBJC every day in stereo along a pretty clean stereo WDBK on 91.5, a frequency dominated by low power signals locally, if I shifted the antenna southwest).

Alas, now the DMX satellite dish is gone and the Probe 9 is in the basement, still mounted with rotor. Maybe I'll have to try mounting it in the attic. I'm getting too old for balancing antennas on steep roofs. I haven't given my Sony XDR-F1HD a rooftop antenna workout at my place.I guess I'll have to hurry while the HDs are still on the air..... Or is the new push in car receivers going to delay HD's succumbing to competition from web/phone apps??

I have a friend in Rancocas with whom I helped assemble and mount one of the best once-generally available FM antennas, the APS-13 (which has been discontinued or limited to special order for awhile now). He had a modified Fischer receiver and was just far enough from Philly and Trenton that he could get most of NYC, all Philly, south Jersey, the Poconos, Delaware, Baltimore and some DC stations (Class A WRNR in Annapolis came in clearly right next to WMGK, WVIA from Scranton in stereo right next to WRTI etc...

Unfortunately lightning got the receiver, but what a great site/setup for everyday reception of what we call DX. Phenomenal.

96.9 translator for WRDV in Bensalem or Atlantic City's Mainstream AC WFPG

96.9 is the WBMR translator. 97.1 is WRDV's Bensalem translator, replacing the old 107.9.

You're far enough from Roxborough to get usable signals from adjacent markets. Being around 7 miles as the crow flies from the blinking behemoths tends to lessen my receiver sensitivity, and my geography isn't conducive to picking up signals to the northeast. Instead I get 96.1 and 105.7 from York pretty regularly and 92.9 from S/WB. But 94.9 is a come-and-go WRBT, simply because there is nothing else of any significant power nearby on the frequency.

Can you get WNTI and WDVR (main signal at 89.7 and/or translator at 91.9)? How about WDIY (88.1) from Allentown? How about WCIM Shenandoah (west of Allentown) on 91.5. That religion-formatted signal occasionally pokes its way through on my Tecsun portable with DSP.

Okay, to make it easier, I'm posting the list of stations that I can receive.
This is the list I send out to the aircheck collectors board.
In answer to your question the tuner I'm using is a Yamaha T-85 modified by Steve Solomon.
I always wanted to get an APS13, but think Ed Hanlon is out of business? Is he still around and are the antenna's still made?
Right now i'm useing a Wind Gard FM-only antenna on a 20-foot mask.

lots of static in the background. this is due to the sideband of the digital stream, on the

ajacent channel, which sounds like a noisy Hiss on an anolog receiver. (Example, 98.3 has

static from 98.1 which is broadcasting a digital signal on both 98.3 and 97.9, which means that

on 98.3 on an anolog receiver, you can hear a static like hiss sound in the background of WMGQ,

and no amount of turning the antenna will get rid of it. 98.1 would have to stop broadcasting

the digital feed in order for 98.3 to have a clear signal.) These stations are static weather in

stereo or mono, and switching to mono doesn't make much difference. I can receive these

stations, but you're better off going to a different trader for better stereo reception if

possible.

Note that if two city of lisences appear, the station's primary city of lisence is first,

followed by its secondary coverage area.
