Entercom Launches Alt 98.7

I didn't expect to have to connect the dots between ratings and revenue so overtly.

I do agree 100 percent with your second paragraph above.

The station has been running promos for the past week (and this morning) promising twofers all day today. Heard such a promo ten minutes ago.

That said, I've only heard one twofer so far in more than 30 minutes of listening (two songs from Nirvana).

So, these schmucks can't even get THAT right.

On the bright side, the folks in Southfield finally got off their butts and fixed the longstanding RDS issues over a month ago. No more "Amp Radio 98.7" on the readout.

Twofers all day on most classic rock stations I've listened to means two or three an hour, not wall to wall twin spins. I don't know why you'd expect any different from an alt station.

As for the RDS, has incorrect RDS data ever cost a station a dollar in billing or a tenth of a point in the ratings? People who complain about that stuff remind me of the SiriusXM subscribers who obsess over the channel logo artwork or the album covers that are displayed on the screen of some radios. Does that actually matter? Don't most people LISTEN to radio, not watch it?

Yes it's an old promotion. They call it "Two For Tuesday," and it's two songs from one really big core artist maybe once an hour.

Every station in Michigan where I've heard Twofer Tuesday plays back-to-back, wall-to-wall twofers. This includes WRIF, who has been doing it for decades.

I'm surprised to hear doing it wall-to-wall is uncommon.

If stations don't want to maintain RDS properly, then why bother even using it?

98.7 beginning today is doing some dry segues between songs. I like the change.

Also seemingly absent is usual midday voicetracker, Brady (who I believe is based at WNYL). He actually does a decent job. I've sat thru eight songs plus a commercial break and have heard no DJ yet.

Are you sure it's intentional? It almost sounds like the voicetracks didn't get placed or weren't delivered.

Brady's still listed on the website as a jock, though I'll grant you that websites are usually among the last thing most stations update (and they really should be a lower priority than the on-air product, though I'd agree most stations don't value them highly enough).

Excellent points. I am not at all sure it was intentional. We all know how sloppy Audacy has been with various technical aspects of this station in the past (their track record in the past 6+ months has been pretty good, though).

I'm hearing Lazlo's talk show will stop being carried in Detroit and Las Vegas after this week.

I thought Lazlo had been returned to being strictly a KC host a while ago. Surprised to see he's still in Detroit.

What's happened lately is Audacy hired Ross Mahoney last month as regional VP of alternative, covering Kansas City, Las Vegas, Orlando, and Richmond, reporting to Kevin Weatherly in LA. So he's Lazlo's boss. Perhaps he's wondering why his talent is being heard in Detroit.

Meanwhile, who's running Detroit? As of March, it's Brad Steiner.

So perhaps we'll see something new in Detroit. Or perhaps an extension of another of Steiner's stations.

Julia, a cast member of Lazlo's show, ought to handle an air shift on WDZH solo. She is from Metro Detroit originally, was morning co-host toward the end of 98.7's CHR run, and sounds decent on-air.

Also wouldn't surprise me if Holly Hutton is asked to handle a shift at WDZH. She was Music Director / middays at 89X for a number of years (long before Bell Media allowed the station to rot).

98.7 is very detached from the local concert scene. Concerts involving core artists seldom get mentioned. Once in a great while, the station might do a text-to-win ticket giveaway. Greater effort in that area would be nice.

That would be quite a knife in the back if they were to fire the guy before that concert.

I am hard pressed to see the company continuing to pay three people (I'm excluding Julia for obvious reasons) to host one day part on one station. I bet at least one of the remaining cast members will either pick up additional responsibilities, will be reassigned or will be downsized.

Personally, I can’t see Audacy outright canning the show. Lazlo brings in $ to the cluster and does pretty well in his target demo, and is in (usually) good favor with the higher ups.

It was interesting listening to him pontificate toward the end of yesterday's show. He has a really high opinion of himself (nothing wrong with that necessarily). He does well on 1 station in 1 market that isn't even a top 20 market and is probably no better than a middle of the pack biller in said market. He behaved as if Julia's involvement in his show should be some sort of major career milestone for her (despite the fact she's heard by far more people on a daily basis than he is).

All that being said, he without question is an instrumental part of KRBZ and is popular with that station's audience. It wouldn't surprise me if KCJK (even though that station has returned to a pretty strong active rock lean in recent weeks, even playing Led Zeppelin and "Master of Puppets" by Metalllica) would be happy to have him.

KCJK hired and let Afentra (Lazlo's ex wife) go. She had a decent following too. And I enjoyed the part of the show where she'd pick the playlist. But that didn't fit with the active rock shift.

The irony is Lazlo's strength apart from his show was programming - yet when they made adjustments, they didn't integrate his philosophy that actually worked for the Buzz, and even changed the mix of that station. If anything, they might have leaned on his experience more with the other stations from a music standpoint - but that's not the direction Audacy chose.

Not sure how shifting back to more of the same burnt gold mix with incompatible currents is going to do any better for the stations dropping his show than his show did.
