Entercom Makes Waves in Seattle!!

They just went against the grain-of-late in flipping a Hot Talker 100.7 The Buzz to a Hot Country 100.7 The Wolf.

I have spent the majority of my life in Seattle, this would explain my excitement.

That aside... could Entercom do the same here (OH PLEASE!!). KNCI is so stale and is doing nothing to better themselves. Very conservative playlists and slow to add hits (already discussed). Bottom Line: They need competition to give accountablilty to their listeners. I think it's silly that they continually call themselves #1 choice for hot new country in NorCal. Crazy kids.

I say they flip KWOD or KSSJ.

Yeah lets blow up successful KSSJ for country, Sacramento could sure use boost for it's cowtown image.

All kidding aside...Country in general is not that hot right now.

Not only that, KNCI itself is successful in its current position, and has been one of the top-rated music stations in the market for years.

And don't forget...KNCI flanked ITSELF with KRAK/98.5 for years. Various other attempts to get share out of KNCI on both the "hot" and "classic" country sides have not lasted.

OA, I'm right with you on this one (as I am most of the time). KNCI will not flip (not anytime soon). Like OA has already mentioned, they're one of the highest rated music stations in the market. Pat and Tom do VERY well and the station is all in all "family friendly".

Country may not be "hot" right now, but KNCI remains in the top of the stack so I don't see it being messed with.

I never said or implied that KNCI should go away. I just hoped that some other cluster would flip an existing stick to country... Again, I know I've brought this up before. Just wishful thinking. I know KNCI is strong and will continue to be. I just think some real competition from a real and financially viable group could make them even better. Nothing is as good without real competition.

As a very popular station, usually in the top 5, and currently the only country station in the market...someone will likely mount that challenge again at some point...if only to shave a few points off their dominance.

I just don't think, for example, that Entercom will trash KSSJ to do it. KSSJ is also quite successful, and the station and format sell very well to higher-end demos ($$$$). It'd seem unlikely to me that any of the other Entercom stations in the market would flip, but I could be wrong on that.

You are onto a key point there, re: any potential competitors... a "financially viable" group.

Trivia question and answer here:

KNCI was the station that knocked KFBK out of #1 12-plus for a book a few years ago, when KFBK had been on a streak of winning it for some time.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I believe KNCI has popped up to the top of 25-54 on and off since then, usually switching back and forth with KFBK.

I agree...At this point, it would take a tremendous amount of time, effort and CRAZY MONEY in an attempt to take away some of KNCI's marketshare. They are a very solid top 3 station in the key 25-54 demo, with no signs of slowing down. Who is out there to mount a challenge, and more importantly, be in there for the long haul? Entercom just flipped KCTC to liberal-talk, but KSSJ has long been a top 10 station for adults with an exclusive format. Now that 93.7 has flipped from "K-Howard" to "Jack", KWOD has a golden opportunity to reclaim some of its past glory in the alternative arena. So, I see Entercom riding that out. Clear Channel's formats look safe, as they all made the top 10 in the last survey.

I think we've totally moved away from TimmyWA original post but I had a chance to look at KNCI's TSA numbers and they do very well outside of the metro as well. Sacatomateos may be less and less of a cow town, but all the towns around it sure are.

I'll speak for Clear Channel's stations since I used to (until recently) work there. Salesslap, you're correct, I think CC formats in Sacto are fairly safe although if I had to bet I'd imagine KGBY would be the first to flip IF IF IF flipping was even an option for CC. I am however VERY disappointed in the lack of Christmas spirit at Clear Channel this season.

"Sacatomateos may be less and less of a cow town, but..." I disagree. It's STILL a cow town! Otherwise, WHY would country do so well here! Think about it.

Well I guess using that argument maybe we'll have to rethink that one....San Diego,
Seattle and Portland are even more "cowtown" like than Sacramento. Just add up their country shares.

I guess the point is...Well 6 percent of Sacramento's listening audience is listening to country at a given time. 94 percent of Sacramento's listening audience is tuned into something other than country.

My issue with Sacramento has always been. Sell short, lowered expectations and gee that can't ever work here. That situation has improved a bit over the years and the "small town" mentality in Sacramento is finally eroding a bit.
