Entercom & News/Talk

It's unlikely to happen, but one thing I appreciate about Entercom is how they've managed to handle News/Talk on FM in Kansas City & New Orleans, specifically.

Hypothetically as a part of this discussion on one of the all newsers moving to FM - what if Entercom made 94.7 "WINS-FM" but instead of a one hundred percent simulcast, placed strong personality driven talk in certain dayparts while powered by the existing WINS newsroom? It wouldn't have to be "liberal" or "conservative" talk. KMBZ FM uses duos, of varying ideologies but always highly local. Often more pop culture and community centric than political. WWL uses mostly legacy talent with multiformat experience and more of a sports angle at times, which isn't likely in NYC due to WFAN.

This compliments the existing WINS brand, is something Entercom does well with and obviously likes, and provides an alternative to the polemic and low rated AM talkers, which don't have much path for growth. And it can be as news centric on the FM as needed.

Is there a reason a KMBZ styled talk format on FM, with the WINS newsroom and branding, wouldn't perform at least as well as Nash on 94.7?

I'm familiar with the sound of KNBZ and have often thought it's approach should be duplicated in more places. And although it seems to target younger than political talk stations, I wonder if this approach works better in the Midwest than it would in NYC.

Would it perform as well as Nash? Alt 92.3 is performing about as well as Nash.

Umm Entercom is going to stick with the usual though with WCBS-AM All News aiming for Suburbs and WINS-AM aiming for NYC Proper though.

As far as I know Entercom has plans for News/Talk distribution over on their Radio.com app to boost national audiences to the platform with the recent CNN and Bloomberg Media Audio broadcast contract deals they recently had though.

Entercom couldn't make 94.7 into WINS-FM without hurting WCBS in the process. Both WINS and WCBS are about tied in revenue, both in the top five among all U.S. radio stations in billing. So giving one an FM companion without doing the same for the other would likely decrease Entercom revenues, not improve them.

And let's say you did simulcast WINS on FM in AM and PM Drive, but with some talk shows in middays and nights, that would confuse the brand. Isn't WINS all-news? The newswatch never stops? You give us 22 minutes, we'll give you the world? Yes, both KRLD Dallas and WBZ Boston do mix All-News by day, talk at night. But with WINS and WCBS each having 50 years of heritage of round the clock news, you wouldn't do that in NYC.

News, sports and talk are expensive undertakings. Entercom already owns WINS, WCBS and WFAN-AM-FM, so I doubt it's going to put a fourth spoken word format on the FM dial in NYC. Someday Entercom will have to move WCBS and WINS to FM. But the day that the AM band dies, or can only support ethnic and religious formats, is still a long way off.

News/Talk on FM will work if done well, there are sevareal national examples of that. And with Apple Music, Pandora, podcasts, etc, it just well be the last vesigae.
