Entercom sale to EMF

For me, it's over now. You want to play games. Respectfully Mike, several of us have attempted to reach out, to offer advise, but to no avail. Considering that, I've changed my mind. I suspect now that RI.com was correct in banning you. Be thankful and consider yourself lucky that RD is far more tolerant. Short of that changing, it's the ignore file for you.

That's understandable. I could see the KLVE calls move to 100.3 and the KSWD calls move to 107.5.

While I can see 100.3 changing calls to something less identified with rock, KLVE is staying at 107.5 as is its name, "K-love".

The KLVE calls are very identified with buyers as meaning the more upscale of the LA Spanish language stations, an image the station has cultivated since the late 80's. Buyers see lists and rankers by call letters, not names, so keeping the calls is very important at that level.

K-LOVE uses the call letters on the local stations for the hourly IDs only, and usually they involve combinations of K, L,and V in order to fit the K-LOVE name.

For decades, the original K-love, K-L-V-E legal ID has been simply to say the calls followed by the city of license.

The EMF K-love stations do try to get some of the letters in the new calls, but since such a high percentage of their total properties are translators, that is not usually possible.

I seem fine with Univision retaining the KLVE calls. Univision also still uses the KOVE and KLQV calls in Houston and San Diego, respectively.

But neither the Houston nor the San Diego stations have the same format as KLVE in LA, and have not used the K-love name for around 12 years or so.

I'm completely neutral with Univision and the K-Love branding in Los Angeles. The only reason why Entercom sold those three stations individually to EMF was because they only needed to divest one station in each of those markets. The remaining markets will see Entercom divest multiple stations and will likely be done in groups rather than individually, not that I want to spread any rumors but to simply "roll with the changes" once the remaining divestitures are announced.

I meant on the full power stations, not the translators.

It's been 3 years and 2 months since K-LOVE bought WCCC in Hartford. They have kept the WCCC call letters. All they did was drop the -FM suffix when WCCC (AM) ceased to exist. K-LOVE donated the AM to a religious school in Minnesota and changed the calls of he AM to WNWW.

Maybe they can say the call letters stand for Connecticut Christian Contemporary.

Wow,, WBZ AM and FM! Whoever picks up The Sports Hub had better have a spillover station to put Bruins or Celtics games on when they conflict with Patriots games -- or when their games conflict with each other. I think there have been times when a THIRD station has been needed, when all three are playing at the same time. So the buyer will have to be one of the established players in the market, right? Looking forward to hockey on WJMN or basketball on WMJX!

Guessing WZLX is being included in the spinoff list because it’s been taking the sports overflow from WBZ-FM for quite some time. The Boston spinoffs were almost certainly to satisfy DOJ sports rights concerns. We’ll likely find out more in the coming days.

I've been long predicting that Entercom was going to divest the WBZ stations. There's no way that Entercom would be allowed to carry all five sports rights in Boston.

Back in the day in Hartford during sports conflicts you had UCONN Men on 1080, UCONN Women on 96.5 FM, and Whalers Hockey on 93.7 FM. (All owned by ARS).

These days WTIC has Redsox Baseball, Patriots Football, and Giants football. During those conflicts the Patriots have ended up on Connoisseur's WDRC 1360. (Is CBS paying Connoisseur to air the games?) Actually I wonder if WTIC will carry any more Giants games this season with the Giants pitiful 0 and 5 record.

And now it winds up with only one -- the Red Sox. Are Entercom and whoever picks up WBZ-FM allowed to execute, or even consider, a post-divestiture transfer of a couple of those other teams' deals back to Entercom -- maybe for a nice little kickback?

I don't know how things will look like with the sports rights yet. However, I have read that Entercom is expected to receive $265 million and 11 stations in 3 markets for the divestitures.

We won’t know until we see the press release, but settlements with the DOJ involving sports rights typically require the seller not to pursue deals like that for a certain amount of time.

I haven’t had a chance to read it, but I've been told the SEC filing states this.

The FCC doesn't consider any sports rights, or number therein, weighted as to requirement of a sale. A station or group having the lions share of local sports teams for a particular market, wouldn't even really be a concern to the SEC. Now if the NFL announced it would be merging with the NBA? That's when the SEC would be in the mix.
