Entercom takes over Bonneville's SF stations

Wow -- "Bonneville is trading to Entercom its San Francisco properties: classical KDFC, adult hits KMAX, and AC KOIT."

Amazing. End of an era.

Could this mean one or more of these newly aquired Entercom stations
flip formats to CHR, Country or Oldies? But PLEASE, don't flip KOIT!!!!!
Keep it "Lite Rock!"

I'm 99% sure Entercom will drump KMAX's format and most likely classical as well. I wouldn't bet on country or CHR though...I mean the whole point it to have listeners and make money right?

I had thought that KDFC was doing well in both ratings and billing, according to previous posts on this board. That, coupled with excellent personnel and a loyal (and well-moneyed) listener base, might mean they'd hang on to the Classical format.

Meanwhile, I'll make a dope out of myself and say "Oldies 1260 KYA and 95.7 KYA-FM, part of the proud Entercom family of stations."

I know. Next post, please.

There's a very good chance Entercom will launch a CHR/Pop station in San Francisco b/c they can actually program it correctly. Bonneville has always been too conservative of a company to properly execute a CHR in a market like San Francisco.

Regardless of format issues, KOIT & KDFC can kiss their union $ goodbye. That does mark the sad end of an era! :'(

I do like the idea of 1260 KYA!

Can this mean a station like Z95.7 might be coming back? Hmmmm.....

Wouldn't Entercom have to be stark raving insane to change KOIT's format?? Other than KGO, it's been the most enduring and high rated radio station in the Bay Area for a couple of decades. I can't imagine the new owners of ABC radio flipping KGO to Sports Talk or All News. Same thing in this case. Besides, they'll need the added revenue from the (former) Mormon Money Machine to pay the lawsuits in the tragic Sacramento fiasco.

I like the 95.7 KYA idea! A simulcast with 1260 would have nostalgia value, but nothing more.

Entercom is a great company they have successful CHR's like 98.5 KRZ they also own a country station as well Froggy 101.3 in Scranton,PA.

Since Bonneville didn't sold their 1260 frequency. What will happen to KOIT AM? Will they move KDFC programming from 102.1 into 1260? Also, will ENtercom bring back Country, Top-40, or Oldies back to the bay area?

This isn't Scanton. Just because a format works for a company in one city doesn't mean they will put it elsewhere. Everyone complains that every city sounds "cookie cutter," then they want companies to copy themselves and put the same formats in every city.

Just like Fighting Irish stated about R and R, allaccess.com also shares the report that KOIT-AM is NOT part of the deal. Will Bonneville change the format on the AM, maybe to compete with KTRB?

As far as I know, Entercom has no real issue operating classical stations. Here in Boston, currently Entercom's largest market, the company nearly acquired a heritage classical outlet and promised to retain the format (albeit planning to move it to a weaker signal). They also own an AM classical station in Kansas City.

Country hasn't worked well in San Francisco in the past, but The Wolf brand seems to be doing very well in many cities, and Entercom is pushing it pretty hard now. It seems possible that they will at least look into bringing The Wolf to San Francisco.

It sounds like Bonneville got the better end of the deal, more stations and two markets!

What are others thoughts on this?

I heard that the COO of Bonnveville came into SF and annonced the exchange to the staff himself before any news was leaked to the press. That was certainly very profesional and considerate.

Now the SF staff will trade employers and Entercom will develop a new format for MAX-FM.

Any ideas on what that format will be or should be?

As far as KOIT-FM and KDFC are concerned those two are very sucessful and I would not expect any changes.

Yes there is an AFTRA union contract and a contact remains in force regardless of owners. KOIT does have a favorable contact (from the employees view).

My contract is not so favorable. Lunch time means eating in-between newscasts, fixing equipment while on-air and hanging out on the helicopter leg to get a better shot of the story. Plus no extra hazzard pay! Who negotiated that contract?

Look forward to your replies.

In Kansas City, Entercom moved classical from a 100,000 watt FM staiton to a puny AM signal and now may be dropping it all together. They just changed the call letters on the 60+ year old station.
