Entercom to Buy KUFX/ San Jose from Aloha Trust

I could also see them trying a 98.5 simulcast. 98 Rock in Sac does really well in the ratings, and that's a format hole in the Bay Area.

How about The Bone (KSAN) 107.7
You know, I am leaning towards a simulcast of KRXQ-98 Rock too. Entercom owns that station and the fact that a listener commuting from the valley to the Bay Area can just leave it on 98.5 and listen to the same station. I remember the days when Sacramento's KZAP & San Jose's KOME broadcast an AOR format so you can literally listen to the same music while driving over the Altamont. As for The Bone, They are owned by Cumulus not Entercom so they can't simulcast there.

I don't think Entercom is that cheap to simulcast a Sacramento station in San Jose, come on

I can see it becoming Active/AOR , like the KOME days, like KRXQ is now, but not a simulcast.

Is there a chance that CC might move the KUFX programming to another one of their stations? Could Entercom just be buying the stick?

Thats already happening, it's called KKSF 103.7 The Band.

KSJO did not work as active rock, why would it work now? I think they will keep it classic rock

I guess they sort of qualify, but they're still more in the "classic rock" vein. Not nearly so much as KUFX or The Band (which I consider to be a "rock oldies" station - I don't think I've ever heard anything on 103.7 that wasn't a top 40 hit). We're still pretty much devoid of a true active rock station that focuses on currents like 98 rock.

I'm saying a Active rock that mixes Classic Rock hard rock and Metal with current Active Rock, Ozzy, AC/DC, Dio, Def Leppard, and Van Halen mixed with Disturbed, Papa Roach, Metallica, and so forth, more current than The Bone.

Kenrayc-

Rock 105.3 (KIOZ) in San Diego does exactly what you're saying and they sound really good!

rock1053.com to listen!

I kinda doubt that a format change is in the works. KUFX covers its market well and gets a 4.9 share making it #5 in the SJ market (#3 in English-language music). Don't know its billings but they're probably good. Why mess with that?

In 25-54 they are #3 in December, after KBRG and KBAY. In billings, they are very close to KBAY. So that reinforces your thought that it would be dumb to change it.

Why would Entercom buy KUFX and just keep it as a San Jose Station? It would make more sense to do what KFOG does.
Simoulcast KUFX on either what is now KDFC or The Wolf. There is more money to be made charging San Francisco rates..and not
having the expense of 2 buildings. Also, all the staffs would be in one place, much easier to manage.

In a situation such as this, can Clear Channel (or in this case -- the Aloha Trust) insert format restrictions into the Purchase Agreement?

If Entercom transfers KUFX's intellectual property to either 95.7 or 102.1, it seems to me CC will have shot themselves in the foot!

My vote would also go to a simulcast of KRXQ Sacramento. For the following reasons:

1. Both stations are short-spaced. KRXQ bleeds over KUFX once you hit Sunol Pass. This would eliminate competing stations on the same frequency...listeners traveling in fringe areas would be less apt to change the dial due to reception loss. And KSAN is spotty in the south bay.

2. KRXQ pulls in huge numbers...#1 FM station in Sac for some time now. That's crazy for a rock format in a Top 30 Market. History has proven that active rock (KOME, KSJO) has done well in SJ when programmed correctly. Sacramento and San Jose demographics are similiar.

3. KRXQ's morning show is already syndicated in other markets...no adjustments needed for the bay area.

4. 98-Rock positions themselves as "California's Rock Station". This also could work in multiple-markets (not just Sacramento).

5. Entercom wants a bigger piece of the pie, and potential is there.

Just my 2 cents!

I could see a simulcast on 95.7 happening though.

But, I still see 95.7 flipping to CHR/Rhythmic and another station picking up the Country music format.
