Entercom to Purchase 103.9 WPHI- Simulcast KYW

Would it be a better move to put KYW on 96.5 and TDY on 103.9? I don't think TDY is doing that well that if they move it to 103.9 they will lose money.....in the other hand by putting KYW ON 96.5 they will probably still generate the same income so they will do increase the listening quality and everything stays the same.

You're right. They only have four in Houston. I knew that and I am not sure where my head was last night. My apologies to Mediafrog too.

KROI is signal-deficient for sure, and it is most deficient in some of the fastest growing areas of of the metro.

I'm reasonably sure the money folks looked at the bottom line analysis and made the decision that gives them the best ROI.
 
I just want to shout out Entercom for being the dragon slayer and finally putting U1's urban station out of it's misery. Not to say they haven't tried... and tried... and tried... to make that format work here. 100.3 and 107.9, as they are now, compliment each other well and I imagine if they have just those two to focus on here, they'll find a sweet spot.
 
So I assume that the acquisition of WPHI is OK on the basis of station ownership limits. What was the reasoning for them spinning off WXTU with the WBEB purchase? Did that have to do with the billings of XTU and More FM/B101?A

Also, do you guys think WPHI will assume KYW-FM after the flip? Would CBS let them?

It does, however, do better with fish and oil rigs than the Senior Road site does.

FCC ownership rules allow one company to own five FMs in a major market. Entercom owns four: WIP, WBEB, WOGL, and WTDY.

There are ownership limits, and there are financial limits. Adding WBEB caused Entercom to exceed the revenue limits in one market. No such problem with WPHI. This revenue rule is referenced in the link below.

They can apply for KYW-FM, and their agreement with CBS allows for continued usage of the call letters.
 
Well this is amazing news! It's been a long time coming, and I think WPHI is the perfect signal for it. While WTDY has a much larger range, WPHI's signal covers the most likely regions to listen to KYW.

My biggest hope is they turn the stereo carrier off to be in mono to decrease noise like what 107.9 does.
 
103.9 is the perfect companion for KYW-AM. It gives them a good FM presence yet doesn't make the AM signal worthless. Entercom couldn't blow up one of their current, full powered FMs without making the AM signal have no value eventually.

^This. Yes. Since moving to central Florida, I've found a number of heritage AM talk/sports/spoken word stations down here that have turned on FM translators to have a presence in their city of license. Meanwhile, out here in the burbs, the old AM heritage signals are still of use to us while the FMs are too weak to penetrate out here.

I can see that KYW's solution will be perfect. The 103.9 signal was never a powerhouse, but it was good enough to penetrate areas where 1060 AM fails.
 
I was just looking into the WRNB and WPHI websites when I noticed the former WPHI facebook page disappeared. I manually searched it in facebook, found the page, but the handle was "@rnbphilly". They've also overtaken the WRNB twitter. Currently, both stations are simulcasting. And as I was listening, we got the radioinsight article.

The logo they're using mentions both R&B and hip-hip, but they apparently absorbed all of WPHI's staff, so it will be interesting to see what (if any) combination of the two stations' playlists is used.

WRNB's former format is also now apparently on WRNB HD2
 
From the RAMP website just moments ago:

Urban One announced that the Hip Hop 103.9 FM format and personalities -- including The Morning Hustle (6-10am), Paris Nicole (10am-3pm) The QuickSilva Show with Dominique Da Diva (3-7pm) and DJ Bran (7-12am) -- will be transitioning down the dial to 100.3 -- the current location of Urban AC sister WRNB. Current WRNB programming and personalities -- The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, The DL Hughley Show and the addition of Al B Sure! at night -- are moving to WRNB-HD2. The new 100.3 R&B and Hip Hop will merge the hip hop and R&B music formats, adding songs and elements that were played on both frequencies.
