Finally, no more of those idiotic commercials on TV or radio. Hopefully there weren't any jocks roped into plugola by being an on-air guinea pig...much like those who got screwed by Body Solutions.

Is it just me being prude-ish in my old age (a whopping 43 yrs old,) or does anyone else think that ads for "male enhancement" are very inappropriate? Same for the new "warming" versions of K-Y Jelly. I'd like to see how parents explain these things to their kids...if they even bother.

Of course, if I had MY way, I'd bring back the ban on advertising from doctors, lawyers and pharmaceutical companies.

And while I'm out fighting useless, winless fights, I'd launch a congressional investigation into why we have such a gas shortage, but Exxon-Mobil can turn in a $39.5 billion profit for 2006. Some things just defy logic.

Do you care that Exxon also paid 30 billion in taxes last year?

Back on the topic at hand... these Enzyte pills were an obvious fraud. What bothers me a bit is that I never once heard or saw any kind of investigation by a news organization about this company. Part of the problem is that the company paid lots of money for commericals and I'm sure the stations and networks didn't want to anger them.

I'm glad this is over.

Tough life...having to make do with only $9.5 billion profit after taxes. So, no, I don't care. Of course, $9.3 billion of it probably went to lobbyists, anyway. :p

Well, that's the INEVITABLE glorious results of "deregulation" for ya.

Like the old saying goes "Never take down a fence if you can't remember the reason why it was put up in the first place...."

I will be so glad if those vulgar messages quit showing up in my in-box.

I worked for a cluster that got a ton of money from Enzyte to advertise the product in either 2002 or '03. As far as I know, none of the jocks did any on-air testimonials for the product. I remember fielding calls from listeners of every station in the cluster complaining about the ads. I have to agree they were pretty lame and at least borderline offensive. However, management explained that Enzyte could have pretty much any slot it wanted given that it threw around $50,000 at our small market cluster for a four month advertising campaign.

Of course, if I had MY way, I'd bring back the ban on advertising from doctors, lawyers and pharmaceutical companies.

I've thought that several times lately myself. Hearing those spots saying, "Ask your doctor for...", have really started to irritate me, especially as I've seen prices go through the roof. I mean, why should I have to ask my doctor? Don't I pay him to know what prescription would be best for me?

as one pointed out "deregulation" has screwed things up not only in broadcasting but elsewhere. Perhaps the Political climate is finally starting to change back to a more common sense instead of the industries regulating themselves. As for the Exxon-Mobil comment. In economics, and if you ever had an economics class, a 100% profit margin is what you needed and it is a constant. Anything above is sure greed and gluttony, and as far as Exxon's tax payments goes, I wonder how many deductions they got. Consider their former CEO got a multi million dollar retirement check for the rest of his life, unlimited use of the company plane anytime anywhere, three memberships to three exclusive resort golf courses, use of any car in the Exxon fleet with chauffer, the use of three resort homes for recreation, plus two yachts. damn that company is struggling,no wonder gas is high.
lastily that refinery explosion in west Texas, where only one person was "slightly burned'? The CEO of the company said they "STILL WILL BE ABLE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF ITS CUSTOMERS"(Heard on David Johnson's show on KRLD) translated ..no disruption. So why did prices skyrocket overnight?answer: Derregulation

You mean no more ads with a "wood" grain background? Double entendres & innuendo were aplenty.

Maybe Big Oil is using Enzyte to stick it to the public, they are doing a good job of it.

I was a cashier at a chain drug store here a few years back and we actually carried that stuff. A lady came in one day wanting some, and didn't know the news of the company's liquidation. Ironically, our weekly circular had a listing/picture for it (even though the firm was going kaput), and a check of the shelf? Sure enough, none in quantity. The lady actually asked me if we were going to get more in and wanted a rain check. What a ditz!!!! I don't think she believed me about the co. even as she was leaving the store....

Is it just me being prude-ish in my old age (a whopping 43 yrs old,)

We're the same age, Mike!! Don't rush things! You couldn't be having any more 'senior moments' than me...

or does anyone else think that ads for "male enhancement" are very inappropriate? Same for the new "warming" versions of K-Y Jelly.

You're not a prude....these (if they HAVE to run) should be on late-night/overnight, like those special latex water balloons (he hee) are....

Of course, if I had MY way, I'd bring back the ban on advertising from ..., lawyers, ....

There are entirely TOO MANY lawyer ads here (radio, TV, phone book covers, billboards, whatever) :-X !!

FYI - The profit margin for Chevron is just under 10%, Exxon-Mobile is around 11%... Hardly what I would call "windfall profits"...

Gotta love those "spin doctors", thats what they get paid for. No Go Milton.

Speaking of....I kept seeing their "holiday" and "greatest hits" ads on the dish all weekend long.

That's not spin. Exxon's stock is available for purchase at 12.3 X earnings. The average P/E ratio for the S & P 500 is currently about 17.5 Even CBS stock will cost you 14.5 X earnings.

Nobody is complaining about CBS making too much money.

No, it's not just you.

It was inappropriate several times over:

1. It's bad taste to even run these kinds of products on the air.
2. It's irresponsible to sell ad time to products that you pretty much *know* are fraudulent.
3. It's bad for the station and its other advertisers to run ads that are going to push the tune-out rate during those long stop sets even higher than it already is.

While im not a really big prude when it comes to ED or lubrication ads, I do take some offense to broadcasters running ads that were knowingly fraudulent when it came to their product claims.

Indeed. Speaking of tune-out rates, one that does it for me is the series of ads, obviously from some ad farm, that all have the same announcer at the end who repeats an 800-number FOUR times. It's different spots for a variety of unrelated products, and different toll-free numbers, but the same IDIOT on each one who thinks I'm so stupid that I can't remember or write down a phone number.

Far as products themselves, a la Enzyte, this reeks so badly of the old snake oil salesmen, or the "Crazy Crystals" of yesteryear, or the relentless ads that sponsored Wolfman Jack and others on XERF and other Mexico blowtorches (where they don't have a Federal Trade Commission or FDA to "protect" folks like WE have.) (/sarcasm)

Strange that we can't get potentially life-saving medicines pushed through the FDA without a 10-year wait, but any "herbal" remedy can go on the shelf with no worries about truth-in-advertising or safety testing.

Also speaking of tune out rates...

Any commercial with Billy Mays - that guy who yells instead of speaking - gets my immediate tune out. Stain removing detergent, that putty that picks up tractors, etc.

Apparently he hasn't grasped the concept that microphones can pick up a normal speaking voice without the need to shout.
