Epix launches with a Madonna concert - and a whimper

Viacom's new "threat" to HBO, Showtime, and Starz has launched, but Verizon FIOS TV subscribers are the only ones with access. Is it really a good move to launch a new premium service, or should the partners (Viacom/Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate) have just negotiated with services that already have wide distribution?

Personally, I can see Showtime and Starz merging (Showtime's expertise with original series, along with Starz' superior movie library, would make one stronger competitor to HBO).

We may have a case of a premium cable version of Victory Sports One here.

Watch...in three-six months after nobody has picked up the channel, Viacom is going to go crawling back to Showtime and make up with them, along with bringing along all their exclusive programming. Without any kind of multicasting channels and deals with three of the lousiest studios in Hollywood (two are frequently warding off bankruptcy and hostile takeovers, while the other just makes plain terrible films), there is no way I'd pay $10 a month for this channel at all.
