EQUIPMENT THEFT AT WCSZ

only somebody who would know how to make some money off a transmitter and a dj board it would steal them. it sounds like an inside job to me. key check please.

They parted out the MW-50. I don't think it was a copper thief. Someone knew exactly what they were doing.

Bill Boyd the engineer told me all what was done.

As a side note WCSZ had been off the air more than a year, and the FCC DENIED the new STA to remain silent.

Is the station still licensed at all? I'm sure you can't get STA's forever....at a certain point, wouldn't you either have to go back on the air (which WCSZ did not seem interested in), or just turn the license in?

Sad to hear this has happened. This may very well be the end for 1070. This station has a long history in the upstate. I remember when it was Top 40 and later Urban Contemporary. I remember the fire that totally destroyed the studio and transmitter in the early 70's. Maybe somebody familiar with the station knows the history but I wonder if the MW-50 that was parted out by the thieves is the same one that went on the air after the rebuild from the fire back then. Depending on what kind of shape it was left in, could it be put back on the air if replacement parts could be located or is it totally scrap now?

As I understand it, if the station has been off the air for more than a year, the FCC can't extend the silent STA. An Act of Congress requires the revocation of the license of any station that remains off for over a year.

Funny. The FCC still thinks they are on the air, according to the data I can find. I guess when that last STA was denied the FCC just figured they resumed operation.

You never know I remember when 103.9 out of Orangeburg was off the air for at least 4 or 5 years or more maybe 6 or 8 years, it was a very long time then all of sudden boom back on the air with transmitter half way between Orangeburg and Columbia with studios in Columbia. I never heard why they were off for so long then sold and brought back after all that time.

most people i have talked to think that it was an inside job for an insurance claim. thieves even destroyed the dog houses at the base of the towers which imho is not something an amateur thief would look for especially with the radiation and high voltage signs required by the fcc. towers are dark. very sad for a legendary signal.
