Atlantic City/Cape May Equity Atlantic City To iHeart

I knew it I knew it I knew it!!!! I mean, I'm not super excited that these stations are going to biggest player of them all, but I've had a feeling for some time. The lack of DJs during the day, the sale of several stations; the writings were on the wall.

Here come the Kings of McRadio to AC/Cape May. 🤮

In fairness, aside from WTTH (which played a nice mix of classic R&B and hip hop, particularly on the weekends), none of these stations were terribly unique, in no small part because all were mostly or completely automated. And all pitched up their music for whatever reason - fine for Top 40 or Rhythmic CHR, but really doesn’t make sense for an older skewing format especially.

I would imagine iHeart will eliminate anything else unique about these stations since that’s what they do, but only time will tell.

Over the last decade or so, their stations had been heavy on new music, especially overnights. Of course, 'ZXL and 'MID are the exception.

I just can't get past Gary's statement in the article "these are world-class stations with world-class staff". A bit exagerated , don't you think?

Depends on your view of the world. In the context of the market, he may be right. The stations are in market #154, which makes it smaller than Molene, IL. Trenton, and Saginaw MI. There isn't a lot of money there once you get away from the casinos and the hospitality business. They could make more money selling pizza and Italian water ice. It's a small market that happens to be a one hour drive from a very large market.

What staff?...

Contrary to the views of some here, they have several on-air people, programmers, and engineers.

Here are a couple examples

As I stated in the fourth post in this thread yesterday...

"WAYV has been all remote tracked outside of mornings for years. WTTH is jockless outside of Steve Harvey in mornings. The Buzz is jockless outside of a syndicated mixshow on weekends. WZXL has a morning show and their PD doing 10am-5pm."

I'll also add They have an off-air Operations Manager who programs WAYV, WTTH, and WZBZ. Engineering is a contractor and there's a handful of sales-people. This cluster is as slimmed down as most iHeart clusters. There's six programming/on-air staffers plus sales.

The article says Equity has already unloaded WEZW. No more "WCMCWildwoodWEZWildwoodCrest" at the TOH before long.

WZXL airs the Phillies (love the "Start Me Up" intro under the WZXL legal during Phillies games [and I'm more into the Beatles than the Stones]), whose games WMID, WCMC and WEZW simulcast with WZXL's bumper and legal (at least when I vacationed in Bethany Beach and heard them on WCMC a few years ago). What will happen to that simulcasting arrangement?

I’d think iHeart will also offer Philly advertisers a package that includes the jersey shore stations.

Are there lots of Atlantic City folks who go to Philly to shop or obtain services? The Philadelphia visitors to Atlantic City are not going to listen to the radio while there; nearly no hotel has bedside radios any more and nobody takes portables around with them these days.

Your idea is interesting, but I wonder if there is a client base.

Billboards along I95 and I76 advertise performers at the AC casinos. It's only a 1-hour drive.

And folks from Philly can "drag" their favorite stations most of the way to AC. At that point, I suspect many use satellite, streams and the like. The days when people scanned the dial when away from home are certainly far less common than in the 50's through the 90's.

Whenever my parents go on roadtrips, after not finding anything they like on the dial, they break out the phone and listen to WPRM. And they're almost retirement age.
