erie

I could be wrong, but Erie seems to be a distant suburb of Pittsburgh (128 miles,) even though it's closer to Cleveland (102 miles.) However, if proximity is the sole criterion, it's more closely aligned to Buffalo (94 miles.)

Sports-wise, Erie is split between the Browns and the Steelers (aka, "Stillers.") Guess it depends on which team is having a better season.

There are some who say Erie is a no-man's land having no connection to any of the larger cities to the north, west or south.

Even here in Allentown -- much closer to Iggles territory than Stillers territory -- the Stillers have a higher percentage of fans than one would expect. The Stillers seem much more to be "Pennsylvania's Team" than the Iggles.

The state line trumps proximity when it comes to sports affiliations; back in the 1970s before the birth of the Blue Jays, Buffalo seemed much more interested in the Mets and Yankees than the Bucos or the Indians, even though New York is much further away.

I support the observation that Erie is somewhat its own media market -- IIRC it has its own big 3 TV network affiliates.
