Ernest Sparkman

Years ago I would shake my head at WSGS and its small town approach, I was young and stupid. Today my view is different in today's radio climate. Ernest Sparksman was a broadcaster who served the community. Condolences to his family.

In a time when most radio is systemized and sanitized WSGS kept it on a local level. I have picked that signal in Lafollette and Lexington.

I was just like you--laughing at WSGS, but for years now have realized that the WSGS mission of local radio that doesn't rely on a satellite feed is a gem. Hopefully it will carry on in his absence. I never met the man, but he's a radio hero in my book.

It is my belief that Clear Channel, Cumulus, Citadel and the like could learn a valuable lesson from Mr. Sparkman. Keep it live, local and serve your community. It's the way radio USED to be and the way it SHOULD be.

You can keep your voice-tracked automated ipods. Sadly this has been what radio has become. No wonder it's a dying media.

I do not know them personally but, condolences to the Sparkman Family. Hopefully the mission of the station will remain the same.
