Ernie Anastos' Radio Cluster Sold

There are quite a few examples... and Mr Fybush can probably name 'em all... of stations off for years and years due to things like... property condemnations under eminent domain where a suitable alternative site can't be obtained or the permit process takes a long time and results in legal cases... or hurricane damage where the city of license virtually disappeared... and so on. The FCC will be understanding in many such cases.

I seem to recall that an upstate NY station on 560 would come on once a year to keep the license, and that ruse went on for a number of years.

Right what you are talking about is called an "emergency STA", and the FCC is very specific regarding the requirements to meet such a deal. (Tower collapses, disasters, etc.)

STA lengths can vary depending on the situation, and type of STA filed. They can go anywhere from 30 days to 180 days depending on the situation.

According to the STA filing (BLSTA-20120308ABH), DJRA has 180 days to resume broadcasting, and must broadcast prior to April 2, 2013, or the license will expire as a matter of law.

See for yourself. http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=32941

True, true...but having resumed broadcasting, 1540 can then file for another silent STA and disappear again for a year, just as WCKL kept doing for all those years.

I wonder, could a future owner of 1540 move the towers south to a place like Glenmont or Selkirk? It'd help the signal within Albany itself (but you'd have to keep in mind, you'll still need to protect KXEL and ZNS-1... yet CHIN would benefit from Albany's 1540 moving south :))

You wouldn't want to move too further down - then you'll need to start worrying about protecting KMPC in L.A. ::)

Why has this thread TOTALLY steered away from its original title--- and not looked back ???

Ernie Anastos sold his stations-- remember?
Although there's still no sign of any changes at any of them...yet.

Don't believe that the FCC has approved the sale yet. It's my understanding that the target takeover date is 9/1. New owners are being smart and playing it very close to the vest so as to not jeopardize the deal.

That being said, what would YOU do with the stations?

1160 has a pretty good signal in the four core cities in the daytime, remember... Could we see some type of talk, sports or ethnic/brokered format? (maybe "1160 WPTR: Albany's Progressive Talk"? ;)) There's also two new sports radio networks coming soon (CBS and NBC), but is there room for a third sports format in Albany? As for 1240 and 900/106.1, the former would've been decent with a 1400 simulcast (you listening WAMC? 1460 or 1540 would be better than 1400) and the latter could work for something like smooth jazz or some inner-city format :)

Why is it a given that they'll change? I know that what usually happens, but doesn't 1160 have a pretty good following? I'm old fashioned I guess and still believe they can be somewhat viable by staying the course. I only listen to them during the "dial global" hours (when I choose that format) and can't hear 1190 WSDE. Meanwhile is it assumed that YNN on 900 was a bust?? I've found it useful on rare occasions. I DO like the smooth jazz suggestion for 106.1 however--- but am certain that'll NEVER happen. I don't think we need any additional sports talk...but something ethnic could possibly work in Albany I guess.

I'm assuming they'll leave WQAR alone. Speaking of SJ -- I believe their Sunday Jazz Brunch has a strong local following. Walt Adams is made for that show... having done 103.1 all those years ago. ;D

Even a radio simulcast of the mighty CNN in Atlanta didn't last long... As for one of the stations going all sports the need for a third sports station: With five sports networks to choose from come next year, the format alone may account for a great percentage of AM stations...

Hmm, WPTR was used by 96.7 both as Pulse and as Legends... could we see 1240 staying Oldies then? (or could it end up a backronym for "Progressive Talk Radio"? ;))

"BACKRONYM"?? :D

Progressive talk is a losing format. [[that's all i'm going to say about that]] Sounds like 1240 might hang-in as another oldies reincarnation. With that logic you might assume that 101.3's return to WJKE (the "jockey") might mean a talk-format for veterinarians? :D

I do have to greatly applaud the decision to maybe return to the old "Jockey" name though :) Names like "Star", "Hits", and "Mix" are just too generic, but "Jockey" definitely fits a Saratoga County-based AC station ;)

Can you think of all of the possible "Jockey jock" names? "Harness Harry"? "Top Line Tom"? Oh, and the name of the wakeup show's got to be "Morning Glory"... ::)

I heard something about a comedy radio service starting up, might WJKE stand for "JOKE" . Might they join this service?
Probably not on 101.3 (remember, they were WJKE "101.3 The Jockey" for years before Anastos bought them)... If they were to change any station to comedy, it'd more likely be either 1240 or 900/106.1 :)

I think the demographics of the area are now such that a Spanish-language station would surely have enough of an audience on 1160 to make a change profitable. A slightly better signal in Amsterdam would be preferable, but 1240 (which reaches Amsterdam better) has too many problems in Albany and Troy to consider, IMHO.
