Ernie Harwell dies

I'd thought this would all over this board today. Anyhow, RIP, Mr. Harwell. One of the truly great legendary sports broadcasters. Where would baseball be without the likes of him?

Great guy, great talent. He was definitley a jewel to the city of Detroit. He was without a doubt one of the nicest people around, Very caring and generous. One of the greatest things about Ernie, was the way he communicated with the fans. He was always conversing with them, and even though you just met him, you would feel like you knew him all your life. Tiger baseball will never be the same. R.I.P Ernie

I listened to Ernie for many years (both day & night on WJR). His friendliness came right along with those Tigers' broadcasts. I especially recall that 1968 World Championship season and those commercials for Stroh's Beer. The passing of a beloved figure is especially sad and so it is with Ernie. R.I.P. to someone who reached out to us over the airways. Thanks for all of those times, Ernie.

My brother, who operated a sport memrobelia store, obtained a copy of one of Ernie's books many years ago and decided it would be worth alot more if Ernie autographed it. He went to a Tigers game and sought out the broadcast booth. The guard at the time was elseware and my brother was able to walk right in on George Kell and Ernie broadcasting the game live. My brother didn't think twice about it because he had spent alot of time in studios with me. Well, as soon as they hit a break and were off the air for a minute George started berating my brother for walking in but Ernie stopped him and ask why my brother was there. When he found out why he graciously signed the book and invited my brother to watch the rest of the game from the broadcast booth. That's what kind of a great guy Ernie Harwell was.

One of THE BEST baseball broadcasters, EVER! R.I.P., Ernie Harwell. :(

I'll always treasure the Bible verse Ernie used to read at the beginning of each spring training in Lakeland. He would read from the book of The Song of Solomon,

"The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land"

When you heard Ernie read that you knew spring was near. God has taken Ernie's voice from us and he'll be very much missed.
