Es skip in the big easy

Well not exactly the big easy (as I'm west of the city) but flipping thru radio today (Wednesday 6/15 about 1:30pm) caught a very slight tropo (KQID 93.1 starting to come in) before catching some Es skip stations from Colorado! Others can't be IDed but caught:

KBCO 97.3 Boulder(AAA format) advertising a Mellencamp/Forgerty concert
KKCS 101.9 Colorado Springs (country) Riding right on top of WLMG
KRKS 94.7 Boulder (Religious)
KXPK 96.5 Evergreen (Spanish)
KCCY 96.9 Pueblo (country)
KRDO 95.1 (The Peak) Colorado Springs (AC)... This is my second catch of this station!
KSPZ 92.9 Colorado Springs (oldies)
KKMG 98.9 Pueblo (top 40)

Any others catch this?

How in the world do you get Colorado stations when you're just west of New Orleans? Jeez, I could never imagine FM stations doing that.

Speaking of tropo, I remember one time around 4 years ago I was in Nashville, I was scanning around the late 1500s/early 1600s and caught some Cajun music right around the 1600 mark. I thought "could it be?" as I knew KLEB 1600 in Houma played that music. After the first song, I started hearing the imaging "home of (something I can't remember), the Rajun Cajun 1600 AM" and then it immediately faded out. The next night, I tried tuning in again, and then I finally caught the imaging that it was in fact KLEB.

I wondered how a measly (no insult to the format, I just mean in terms of signal) could a 1000 watt station in Houma be carried up this far when it can be barely picked up in New Orleans.

The 95.1 is that KRDO I put the info on earlier.....

The 103.5, There is no stations in Idaho on that frequency, But there is a 103.5 in Salt Lake City,Utah ...Call is KSRP and has a translator in Idaho and Wyoming...

Positioner should be "Arrow 103.5 Classic Hits"

Thanks for the report...

Es skip is one form of skip. It just so happens that occasionally in summer, conditions get just right and allow for Es skip to occur on the FM and lower TV bands... The band opening above lasted all of maybe 30 minutes..Once I realized it was a band opening I tried to grab what I could as fast as I could... About half of those calls above are what I beleive they are, As I just caught the format... KBCO and the peak are the only two I can verify 100% as being caught due to ID... But with a little digging, yes.net would have gave me the rest...

If it was at night, It's nighttime propagation that does that..It sometimes allows for stations to be heard many miles from it's original target
Nighttime enhancement is why I catch KWKH from Shreveport which is normally outside it's ground wave from me....

Also KLEB is a 5KW signal daytime/ 250watt at night (with a CP to upgrade to 7.5KW daytime right now) but unfortuneately, most of it is wasted over water...
daytime pattern: http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KLEB&service=AM&status=L&hours=D
Nighttime pattern:

The only way I determined Idaho was from a car dealer advertisement on the station. Thanks for the info.

Re: Colorado Es skip

I missed the event you just caught, but over 25+ years of living in Louisiana I have received stations from that area of Colorado more than once.

Having subsequently visited the Denver area, I wonder if the effect is enhanced by the fact that the mountaintop Denver-area FM transmitters look southeast toward LA over many miles of somewhat flat prairie.

Interesting effect in reverse: I now work in hilly north San Antonio, where it is common to have Baton Rouge's WDGL 98.1 overcome Austin's KVET 98.1. In fact, if you boys like skip, just come to South Texas. Seems like it is more often than not that moist Gulf rolls in in the morning... and the FM band is one big mess of signals from everywhere.

Sporadic E-skip is a relatively rare but exciting occurence. The E-layer of the atmosphere usually passes FM broadcast band signals right through into space. However, occasionally, patches of high ionization form an "RF mirror" in the sky that can reflect FM signals for thousands of miles. These events generally last for only a few minutes at time, and the patch can move, causing stations from one area to fade out and stations from another area to fade in. E-skip differs from tropo, which is caused by a temperature inversion that forms a "duct" that carries signals for a few hundred miles. Tropo is most common along the coasts, and can last for hours or even days, especially during hot, humid, and windless weather.

During one e-skip event about 25 years ago, from my home in Longview, TX, I logged stations from Phoenix, then Las Vegas, then Salt Lake City, then Boise as the ionization patch moved north. I also logged stations from Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario during another event.

A good primer on dxing can be found at http://www.dxing.com/tvfmdx.htm

No problem... The joy IMO is knowing what you caught... It's 100% easier now to ID stations than it was before the internet...and wanted to let you know what you caught...

Besides, that beats all of us with the Utah signal into Louisiana....
