Escape from Alcatraz

I didn't see the show, and I suppose they might have survived, but I doubt it.

I'll look for a rerun of it.

I was living in Marin County in 1962 when these guys "escaped". There were cops all over the place for several weeks and nothing, absolutely nothing, was ever heard from any of the three escapees. The water in the bay is very cold year round and the currents are strong. There are lots of sharks. They would have had to be excellent, read: world class, swimmers to make it to S.F. from Alcatraz - a bit less to Angel Island (but would then have to evade searchers on this uninhabited island and eventually swim again to Tiberon. Body surfing behind a ferry would be virtually impossible as ferries do not travel fast enough to put up a surfing wake for the average sized human male. It is possible, I guess, to have had someone in a boat pick them up a distance away from Alcatraz but the conspiracy necessary for this type of escape would be very difficult to conceal and would have required inside assistance.

I watched the show and thought it was great. I think there is a good probability they could have survived. As the show mentioned, why would these guys spend a year and a half planning an escape only to jump in the water and drown? It doesn't make sense, and they surely would have known how dangerous the water was and planned for that. The photo analyst seemed almost certain the 2 guys in the picture from Brazil was of the escapees. By now they would both be around 85 years old and could be dead by now of old age, so we'll probably never know one way or the other. The segment where they exhumed the grave of one of the brothers was very interesting too. I highly recommend watching the show to anyone that may be interested.
