espn 1050

I see the ratings arent so good. does that mean it will become a spanish station? what is the deal with them? anyone? is the station a laughing stock? a place where careers go to die? should I run away ?

The ratings have never been good, but ESPN doesn't mind. All that matters to them is that they can sell their brand name to advertisers and claim that they have a signal in the #1 market in the country, and package that in with all the rest of the ESPN Radio stations around the country.

ESPN, like Radio Disney, is a brand extension for the Disney companies. Both principally boost the brands, and are not "just" ventures to sell ads on. The main benefit is branding, not ad sales. This is why neither Disney nor ESPN radio was sold to Citadel as part of the ABC radio deal.

Just turn it up to 11 Nige.

Why 1050-ESPN?

1050 ESPN is the flagship for Jets football, Knicks basketball, Rangers hockey, Army college football and St. John's men's basketball. That includes pregame, play-by-play and postgame. Also ESPN's baseball and NBA coverage.

There are 3 reasons why the low ratings for 1050:

Lack of local hosts. WFAN has local hosts in every daypart -- Imus, Joe Benigno, and Mike & The Mad Dog are all promoted heavily on the air. 1050 has maybe 1 or 2 local hosts; most of its schedule is national material from ESPN Radio.

Signal problems, especially in New Jersey. That's why 77 WABC simulcasts the Jets play-by-play (though not the pregame or postgame). It's also why Madison Square Garden now has a Knicks/Rangers radio network.

No local teams in the summer. 1050 could have picked up the New York Liberty of the WNBA (they're co-owned with the Knicks) or Red Bull New York (soccer).

ESPN Radio also has a terrible signal in Central Long Island. Any idea which stations are part of the Knicks/Rangers radio network?

I take back part of my earlier post -- Army football has moved to 77 WABC.

1050 ESPN is picking up Syracuse University football.

I know they do it for ratings but I can't stand the phony/macho sports talk gasbags/hosts. The best sports host I've ever heard anywhere is Steve Somers! He may be the best on-air talent in NYC now--- period! (OK Steve-- where's my free dinner at Ben Benson's!)

John Sterling is good --- for laughs! " It is high, it is far, it is--- where is it-- I don't see it. Is it gone? no it's off the right field wall. I don't think Bernie Williams saw it either. I don't have a monitor."

Same thing up in the Hudson Valley especially at night. I remember when ESPN Radio was at 1390 AM in Poughkeepsie and 1340 AM in Middletown. That was used to carried the ESPN Radio brand since 2000 and it lasted until 2002 when ESPN Radio gave up the format, it should go spanish as "El Ritmo". That station went nowhere until 2004 where it became Radio Disney on 1390 AM and 1340 AM up in the Hudson Valley. ESPN Radio at 1050 has been around for 5 years since it kicked off in early September, a week before 9-11. That was after they gave up talk on WEVD along with the CNN Radio TOH News. I've heard CNN TOH News on WWKB in Buffalo since it flipped from oldies when it was "Classic KB" to progressive talk back in February. My brother listens to ESPN Radio at 1050 all the time. I don't care listening to that station.
