ESPN 107.9?

Today, Mediaweek has a story about an "affiliation deal with Greater Media" which is "part of a broad strategy to migrate more affiliates to FM."

Think about this: How many FM stations does Greater Media own in Charlotte? Just one: 107.9 The Link. Granted, they must be good at what they're doing now with personality talk, Bob & Sheri, the whole bit. But reading this article made me wonder if WLNK's days are numbered, perhaps before B&S hang it up?

Now, of course, WFNZ is basically the sports monopoly in Charlotte, and I think they're sitting on ESPN Radio market rights. But Greater Media already airs Panthers games on 1110 WBT, so why wouldn't a simulcast of the games be out of the question?

Not trying to stir the pot - just speculating...

ESPN 107.9? Gee they could have WFNZ's numbers which are even worse! Granted all I get to see are the 12+ but still.

Greater Media has two FM's, they also own 99.3.

Well, radio IS a business before it can be anything else.
I doubt ESPN 107.9 would be more profitable though.

How "broken" is the current format?

We don't really know since we only see the 12+ ratings. There hasn't been much buzz about the station for a very long time. Management says the station is a top biller but we con't figure out how that can be. I don't see Greater Media doing ESPN on a signal like that when it's the best FM they have in Charlotte. They certainly have a good signal but not a great dial position. I wonder if dial position matters anymore?

Do people still go around to car dealers like we used to and check all the used cars on the lot and set the presets on the radios to their stations?? Maybe I am getting old? BIGAPE

I did that in driver's ed in high school -- 25 years ago. Does that count?

Larry Lujack had a great line about that. If you test drive a used car and all the buttons are set to rock stations there's a good change the transmission is shot!
