ESPN 1440 in Greenville

Is ESPN 1440/Greenville still operated under LMA? It looks like Clear Channel is running it now.

At some point the old website started re-directing to Yahoo Sports Radio and now http://www.1440espn.com is the station's site, and it has the typical CC web template/design.

Would be nice to have ESPN on a transator or something for a clearer/more reliable signal, especially at night. I notice that 96.7 is running the USC baseball games now, and I think 1440 used to carry those.

Oh, it looks like CC took control of it towards the end of last year. I questioned the ability for the station to be able to make it on its own given the limited signal.

I'm disappointed that they pulled The Score 4p-6p and put that Spartanburg show back on, especially now that Dan Scott is on the Score three days a week.

Speaking of Spartanburg, I've never understood how the market is able to have two ESPN Radio affiliates? Does it not matter since neither signals (1440 and 1400/97.1) really overlap?

Here's an idea, if CC ever wants to do anything to 96.7: put ESPN on there along with the USC games. Seems like it'd be a pretty good moneymaker with virtually no overhead, would be better than gospel

I'm curious, then, how WQOK was so successful. Was this a problem then?

its still 5kw and directional at night. no matter what station listeners find what they want to listen to and try to remember it while they scribble on their diaries. greatest programming in the world doesn't matter unless you are on a listeners mind when they fill out the diary.

WGVL does have a really good night signal. In Charleston, in the weak spots of 1450's signal and the rare times when 1450's off the air, they come in very well. 1330 also has a decent signal in the distant suburbs at night.

Greenville/Spartanburg needs a decent sports station. It's weird that such a large market (the 60th market) has such a hodgepodge for sports radio. WCCP serves the western part of the Upstate and the Greenville area very well, but that is mostly a football oriented station. The Score is trying hard with 910 AM and a couple others, and has an audience.

1400/1440 try to serve both markets, and then you have all the local high schools on different stations, Phil Kornblut's show which is picked up by probably half a dozen stations, and some of the stations around the area have their own shows. It's not like similar markets where you have just one big sports station, or even Charleston where there's 4 stations but 3 are owned by the same company and the other doesn't have any local programming or play-by-play.

If WGVL is like WSPA-AM (word now) their signal probably goes directional toward the coast. Back in the day I remember 950 used to be the 2nd strongest station at Myrtle Beach on the am dial. If CC could marry to ESPN Spartanburg 96.7-97.7 would be a perfect combo - only weak spot then would be Anderson. But enough helpful ideas for them.

Sports fans check out YAHOO! Sports Radio 910 (WOLI-AM -original WORD). The highlight is the Tim Brando show 9am-noon leading into The Score. Travis Rodgers is also a fun listen. Outside of the Score we're currently YAHOO! all day/night. Now with a new transmitter and night pattern fixed, 910 has a pretty decent nightime signal and gets into Greenville well during the daytime pattern. I'm gonna put the link on here - but please don't judge the station on it's current website - new one coming soon! www.woli-am.com currently good only for on-line listening link. And here's a link to the line up (Sans noon-2pm where we carry The Score): http://www.yahoosportsradio.com/lineup/

I've never had luck with AM at night in Myrtle Beach.

But west of Asheville in my motel room I was able to pick up 950 AM when it was still WSPA, and 1330 AM.
