ESPN 1560 AM - Melbourne - OFF?

What's up ... 1560 has been off the air for several days. Prior to that, they had started running the Robert Wuhl show in the PM drive (comedian that's been in a lots of sports movies, etc.) - not particularly interesting to my taste, but ocassionally he'd have a good guest or two. Living in Brevard actually gives you a sports radio meca in the daylight hours ... between the three ESPN sources - 1080/WHOO-Orlando, 1560/WINT-Melbourne and 96.5/WSJZ-Sebastian you always have the ESPN feed plus a variety of local stuff - throw in 740/Orlando with some local/FOX there's plenty of variety. Now, if only 1060 would pick up the Sporting News Network we'd have it all.

I don't live there, but with 95.9 doing the work, maybe 1560 is no longer needed......they may be on the selling block as well. I live in Broward County, and if I put up my outdoor antenna due north, I can faintly hear ESPN Melbourne, *despite* a low-power 95.9 in the Palm Beaches relaying WSVU 960.

cd

From reviewing the request for STA, I have to wonder if this station will be back... Ground systems do require replacement every now and then, but it sounds like a lot more damage was done. Hard to believe "the Cloud Boys" don't have INSURANCE for something like this... ???

Tuned in on Thursday afternoon in Cocoa when ESPN 95.9 was getting staticky, and AM-1560 WINT was coming in strong.

Tuned in again on Saturday around noon, once again in Cocoa, but 1560 was off the air.

Tuned in again Monday morning around 8:30am, this time in Melbourne, 1560 was still off the air.

I haven't tried again since then, but I guess they're still having issues?

Have you ever been to a Cumulus or Clear Channel transmitter site? Particularly an older AM site, with an old studio building?

"Derelict" usually describes what's there.

You can see the 107.1 Cumulus transmitter site quite easily from I-95 as you drive past it, so I've seen that one plenty of times. Seemed in decent shape, though there's not much there other than the tower itself.

I've also been by the 1560 Cumulus transmitter site somewhat recently... now THAT was derelict, and also somewhat remote. I had no trouble believing someone could break in there and steal a bunch of copper wiring without being seen.

The 1240 Clear Channel site near Front Street in Melbourne doesn't look too bad to me... just looks like a closed-down small business building that still has someone minding the landscaping.

The 1350 Clear Channel site in Cocoa, though... man, that looks even worse than the 1560 site!

Case Closed. ;D

Heard some "oldies" music late this afternoon on 1560 while in Central Brevard ... solid enough signal to think it was local. Flipped back on at 5:15pm to hear the National Anthem being sung ... assuming it was about to go off the air, which it did on my next check at 6:15. Any info on what's up?

1560 is now called WLZR, and "currently off the air" Was that the one playing oldies? Looking at street level mapping, it appears that it was once a self contained station. Any clue what type of transmitter etc is in there. Building looks painted, but vacant.

I'll bet you were hearing 50,000 watt WAGL out of Lancaster, SC. They are easily heard down here in Naples mornings and afternoons.

I've heard WAGL's 50,000 watt directional South signal clear in Marion and Citrus counties every late afternoon after the now defunct co-channel WINV Inverness signed off the air. WAGL has an impressive signal!
