ESPN 680 - Louisville

I am a big Sports 790 WKRD listener. Drew Deener has held the 7-10am slot at WKRD for about 5yrs I believe until yesterday. Today he started on ESPN 680.

To be honest, I didnt even know this station existed. Last time I heard about it, it was Radio Disney I think (years ago). So I got to looking online about the station and why Deener would leave - he sounded as if he had the "keys to the station and UofL" when he was at 790. It appears he is now the VP of the station as long as morning host. He stated on air that his position at UofL would not change (play by play) and that 680 is in the process of purchasing a new signal as "big things are on the way".

Anyone know anything about this? Could UofL be moving all of its programing to ESPN Louisville? I thought CC did a good thing by broadcasting the Lady Cards on WHAS during the Champ game. I also think that 790 WKRD has really catered to the Cards big time (no prob with me, Go Cards!), but I guess I am shocked and confused by the move by Deener.... ??? ???

I am a little shocked myself... 790 has a much better signal. Guess that station is owned by some 50 kw AM station out of KC, but I always thought it was a Disney station. Isn't Larry Glover on there too?

I think the U of L contract is handled by Nelligan Sports, so that part of his work is not tied to a station. I find it interesting that now 680 will have 2 parts of the U of L team with Deener and Valvano.

680 hasn't been Radio Disney for 2 or 3 years. It has progressively built itself up as a sports station. It is the local affiliate for the Reds. It's the little station that that seems to be doing well for itself.

I'm glad to see that ESPN 680 is doing so well competing with CC's 790. I wonder what the new signal will be that Drew mentioned? 680 has a really good signal when they don't have the audio problems that they seem to have a lot of. Maybe a purchase of an FM station is in the works?
Also wanted to mention that things have gone the other way for 680 too. Lloyd Spence left 680 and now does 12 Noon-2 PM Monday-Friday on WNDA 1570. I enjoyed his Saturday morning show on 680 (in fact it's still listed on 680's website!) Its good to hear Lloyd every weekday.

Not a lot of obvious candidates to pick up an FM, unless they buy or LMA one of the stations Cox selling off. 103.9 is their smallest signal, and would be the prime candidate.

It would be great if they were able to get 103.9. However, I think they have a better chance of purchasing either 94.7 or 105.9.

Would Mainline be willing to give up 105.1?

My money's still on 103.9. It would make sense for the new owners to reduce their financial exposure. Shedding a non-core asset could be a good way to do it.

I heard Matt Jones from KSR mention on his show talking about the old country station he can't mention is going to flip formats.

"Old" as in Country Legends 103.9?

Yeah, he says he can't mention it on KSR. I remembered him saying that it was going to flip.

103.9 would help the downtown penetration considerably. There are places downtown that 680 is unlistenable because of the man-made interference.

The 103.9 frequency immediately came to my mind, too, when the potential for better coverage came up. We'll know pretty soon, perhaps by the end of this week.

It would be nice to hear the Reds and the other play-by-play events on WHBE clearly at 103.9 FM! Cumulus was so dumb to bail out on "The Ticket 93.9 FM/AM 1450" so quickly.

Why in the world would Matt Jones mention that since he is on a ClearChannel station here in Louisville unless.......he plans to take his show there as well??

You think that's weird? One weekend on my way to work the weekend show on 1450 The Sports Buzz was interviewing Matt Jones and promoting his show on 1080 WKJK!
