ESPN 700 Athol

raccoonradio said:
Scott Fybush notes in his latest NERW (http://www.fybush.com/nerw.html ) that WJOE 700
in Athol (I thought it was in Orange?), MA switched "quietly" from oldies to ESPN sports on Jan 2.
No change yet on station site http://www.wjoeam.com/

The WCAT-err-WJOE studio building is just off Route 2A in Orange (just a hair west of the Athol town line).

Over a decade ago, while still a starry-eyed college kid, I paid a visit to the then-WCAT studio to explore internship opportunities (ha!)... much to my chagrin the equipment looked ancient even by mid 90s standards. There was all of one guy working there (as I understood it, he was there to take meter readings). Plus, in the middle of a weekday afternoon there was NOBODY in the sales/reception area, which pretty much had no seperation from what was considered the studio area. It was at that moment I knew I had a lot to learn about how small-town radio worked...

I tried to pick up WJOE in the late afternoon on the North Shore (it DOES come in faintly, at least this
time of yr, days) and must have just missed them. Instead I got another daytimer--WDMV out of
Walkersville, MD ("DC Business Radio") but then I started to get WLW instead.

WBCN used to run a comedy bit where they imagined the actor who played Columbo doing a TV show
from a certain northern MA town. "So be sure to tune in and catch 'Falk In Athol' " :)
