So the OBX now has a sports talker huh? Not too bad, a little bland, hey after all it is espn radio. Now I know from working for a former ESPN affiliate that the boys from Bristol pretty much want complete clearance but to be honest it is just a ticket for a slow death because aside from Colin Cowherd the ESPN radio lineup leaves a lot to be desired.
What I would do if I had my dithers....
6-9 or 10a: either a local show OR Fox sports 1st team w/Steve Czaban. if you have to be cheap just follow up Czaban with one hour of the west coast thing that comes on after it or if willing to go local just go to 10. And if you do go local hire some guys with local knowledge and ties but with adventerous tendencies I would think in light of the eclectic nature of the area that you will need someone who can talk about everything remotely part of the reigon which means (in my view) ACC CUSA Big East and lots of Redskins talk.
10-12n; Dan Patrick, sure Cowherd is great, but he alone is not enough, Patrick still has lots of cred and is Cowherds equal.
12-3p: Jim Rome: love him or loathe him he is still the best known host in America, and he is head and shoulders above anyone else availale in this daypart.
3-7 Mark Packer: Packman is the best in the mid atlantic in making each market his own and he would fit right in down on the OBX. it will be like having a 2nd local show, just without the mess and expense!
If no local hosts are to be used at least hire a guy or two to do updates during morning and evening drive. Include local content and flavor Ie weather reports, fishing reports, tide changes and water temps. Open up a whiner line or the equivalent for local feedback and play the best ones back. The local editorials and updates currently in play are nice, but run too often. Both reports should run no more than twice daily, and there need to be promos made to let listeners know when those segments will air.
Nights and weekends just kick in the Fox sports programming when a game is not available but if you are smart you run any game that you can get your hands upon. ECU football is a start but if you want to put together a lineup that will get an advertisers attention I would also add the Redskins with either a Westwood one or Jones network game for the other half of the doubleheader. MNF is mandatory. UNC basketball would be nice, stay away from Duke or Wake, but if UNC not available just plug in NC State, but for gods sake DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH ECU HOOPS, ECU people dont even waste their time with that. NCAA tourney coverage is also mandatory. Braves baseball could draw, but not as well in that particular part of the state, O's or Nats would be a better fit.
Thoughts?
