WMFS is kinda forced to drop Rover and simulcast Mike & Mike, not because of the FCC or any regulations... but really because of ESPN Radio's insistance that Mike & Mike get clearances on almost all of their affiliates.
This is true -- ESPN is notorious for bullying affiliates into carrying Mike & Mike. It's too bad since a stronger morning show could help with the cume for most ESPN Radio affiliates out there. If Rover was really #1 in men (and presumably #1 M12+ would also translate to M18-49 and M25-54) then it seems strange that Entercom would drop him unless ESPN insisted on clearing M&M in Memphis.

It would be a different story if Mike and Mike were... I dunno... good? And that's not considering the fact that if you can't hear them on the radio, you can see them on ESPN2, listen on ESPN Radio's website, or read their commenatary on ESPN: The Magazine. So why force stations to carry something rather pathetic that's already seen and heard everywhere?

I do wonder how other affiliates - like Cleveland's WKNR (my station of record) and Washington's WTEM (owned by Redskins owner Dan Snyder) - would be off if they didn't have to carry Mike & Mike. Chances are they would be way better. (WKNR uses the excuse that Mike Golic is a Cleveland native... but his brother Bob - who played for the Browns - actually still lives in the area and works drive-time for an FM talker in Akron, among other things.)

That, and the fact that ESPN actually charges non-O&O affiliates (including 92.9/680) over $10K to use all aspects of branding - even to air their programming in the first place! Clearly, the mafia is in control within the Brisol compound.

I betcha Entercom probably wishes off-hand that 680 was really a FSR affiliate... they might not have had this problem...

Well, they WERE a FSR affiliate when they started, and jumped to ESPN. Imagine if they were still FSR, and had Geoff & Gary and Vernon with the signal of 680? They could REALLY threaten 560 then.

In checking with the latest trends, I noticed that 56 WHBQ had a 1.7 and 730 Fox Sports with all the local shows had less than a .4 This is 12 plus of course and I'm sure the male demos are hopefully different.

It will interesting to see if the added FM component to ESPN 680 will help or not.

The national shows IMOH are better produced with more substance than the the giggle tracks and sound fx of the local talent. just a thought.

good move! 18-34 pot heads or 18-54 guys with jobs. good move, why not.

I listen to Rover here in Cleveland. I'm not a pothead. You take that all back right now, Mister Pepper.

let me guess: you are under 30, not married, no kids and have no meaningful income. the rover target!

I rest my case. Swoosh. Three-points, around the rim and in. Let's take a commercial break for Bud Light.

What buisness is it of yours, you major-league @$$hole? Let me guess: you've been in the buisness for over 30 years, act as a consultant, and have a rather large family with money shooting out of your ****?

Why don't you get a f***ing life?

Well someone needs to take a look at 92.9's simulation equipment, because I'm listening to Game 4 between the Lakers and Nuggets, and it hits 10:00, and while the game is still playing (meaning they're not in a time out or anything), the equipment hits the legal ID and then plays commercials....while the game's still going on! Fix this, please!

In some ways, it is good and other ways bad. I remember when 92.9 MFS first came out, I loved that station. They played some new stuff but also played a lot of cool old school rock. They were all over town, etc. It was a fun station to listen to. Then, and I am sure he is a great guy, but the station went downhill when Rob Cressman tinkered with the format. I couldn't listen anymore because I am not crazy about alternative and grunge. I can tolerate it a little but not a lot. What bugged me was he seemed totally against old school rock unless it was a band he seemed to like such as Led Zeppelin. Once again it is not a put down to him but I just never thought the format change he brought was going to work in Memphis and myself and several friends stopped listening all together.

Having an all sports station on FM technically is a good idea but the problem is no one can hear 92.9 outside of certain areas. I don't think the format matters until the station gets more power and it never is. However, it is nice to have at least one Memphis sports station that covers (Gasp) sports. I can't take Sports 56. Every show basically covers the same few topics and I may be in the minority but I don't care about the SEC. I am not saying you shouldn't cover that but you should cover other sports as well. I have always continued if you only like one thing (the SEC) then you aren't really a sports fan, you just like one particular thing.

I remember the first time the listeners voiced their opinions on MFS!

The station was owned by the Belz family, and made some managerial and programming decisions that eventually resulted in the dismantling of the original Solid Rock MFS!

A listener put up a website, and there were e-mail campaigns.

The best thing that can be said is that the station made a real connection with listeners. And that's good radio.

But, we all know radio is business. And good business comes first.

My best to those displaced.

Certainly NOT IMPRESSED with 92.9's "Sports Information!!!"
Got to Memphis nice and early Sunday morning to attend the St. Jude Classic. Drove through a driving thunderstorm and kept coming anyway, hoping for a delayed start,
Got into town and killed some time waiting for the rain to let up.
Tried MANY times to tune in to 92.9 to get some tournament information. Couldn't. There was nothing local on it at all. Caught nothing but the national feed whatever part of the hour(s) I tuned in.
Maybe everybody knows that already but me, but when I heard about hte first Memphis Sports Fm, I figured there'd be at least SOME local content. If that were the case...it seems like a weather delay at a pretty big local PGA Tour Event might warrant some coverage locally.
Oh, well...in most cases..once rinky-dink...ALWAYS rinky-dink!

Yup. The closest things to local that they have are the Cardinals and the Vols, the rest is turned over to tWWL. At some point, they will HAVE to get local either in middays or in drive, otherwise it's a waste of bandwidth.

sounds like they're "knockin' it out of the park". put an afternoon show on that sounds pretty good. natl cbs guy for college hoops (mphs loves hoops) and the local sports writer for the paper. probably makin' more money going after guys 18-55 than dudes 13-24.
