ESPN 940?

Maybe someone can explain to me about 790's ESPN affiliation. ESPN doesn't have a second sports network in English called ESPN 2, do they? It's either their ESPN sports radio format, now on 940, or Deportes in Spanish, heard on 1600. So what goes on 790?

790 is referred to as "The Deuce" which is ESPN 2, Paul Swearingen is a FB friend and on his site there's a banner that shows both ESPN 940 and The Deuce on it with the national sports teams they carry, I guess the ESPN affiliation can be split with the two different owners, John and Chris, I guess they both pay for add together, or it's ESPN/ABC that doing it.

So 1430 IS, in fact, IDing as KYNO, and 940 IS, in fact IDing as KFIG. So what IS happening?? I really don't see why there would be the change of call signs. Especially after J.O. went through the trouble of getting KYNO for his talk 940. Why does he let it go now?
Also interesting to see all the local originating programming from 1430 making the move along with the ESPN feed. Will the new 940 be a contender to take FSU football away from KMJ?

Well if 1430 is going to be an Oldies station seems like the KYNO call letters would go good with that.
As far as taking FSU football away from KMJ I can see that, ESPN KFIG always has a large tail-gate party before the game, much larger than KMJ, now with equivalent signal strength.

Yes, a couple good points there. Clues to the mysteries. It almost appears as if J.O. and Chris are swapping stations, management, air staff and all included. But NOT the ownership. LMAing each other, if you will. Hmm So how does THAT work? I guess, since they are not competing for the same audience.... Does Chris have anything to do now with the operations of 940? Will J.O. program oldies on 1430?

KMJ's signal is better than, uh, KFRE, KYNO, uh, KFIGs. I don't see Peak losing the Dogs. They're mad enough that CC pulled the plug on Rush, etc... Tail gate parties say nothing.

We may have stunting on 1430 for a number of weeks. JO just launched his new morning team on KJWL today. One step at a time.

Pacheco plans to enter a bidding war for Fresno State sports now that he has the reach with 940. Good coverage in the Fresno Business Journal today.

Also, KYNO will be rebranded as 1430KYNO Oldies when it launches next month. Shoulda just called it Boss Radio.

Not being a subscriber, I can't access the FBJ article.
I can't wait to see how the bidding for the FSU major sports' rights goes down. I think FSU should distance themselves as quickly as possible from the hate talk on 580. Oh, to see what kinda "behind the scenes" finagling will go on. Just based on the integrity of the "journalistic content" that takes up the majority of the airtime on 580, I would think a state funded educational institution would consider what kind of 'entertainment' programming they wish to surround their sports media presentation with. Yes, I know that issue has been brought up before, but until now, KMJ was the only available signal that had FSUs desired reach. How much dough can a company just coming out of bankruptcy come up with? Does Pachecho have any special 'inside track' from being a major former FSU jock?
When does this bidding happen, officially?

Oh, sorry, I used the wrong term when I mentioned "journalistic content"- I should have said "editorial content' - regardless - what I mean are the out and out lies that KMJ's programming is rife with. Maybe the FSU Journalism Dept. should set up a student/learning project to fact check statements made as "fact" during any of KMJ's M-F "entertainment" programming. BEFORE signing a multi-year contract for their sports broadcasts. Hmm, what are the chances of THAT happening? Do college students still know how to separate fact from lies any more?

I am a Democrat. I Think that FSU should go with the highest bidder, they have a radio affiliate program with stations in Merced and Bakersfield. So coverage is not really an issue. Peak broadcasting runs a station on the AM dial and they seem to be running it in a manner that will make them the most money possible. Unless you can demonstrate how KMJ would be a better station (higher billing) if they changed the programming, or that Peak is underwritten by the Koch brothers, it would be wrong to give the contract to another station. Literally half of the population agrees with that (right wing) point of view, even if they have to lie to look "righter". Suggesting FSU leave KMJ for anything other than money would be like denying a music station 'cause they don't like the music.

With that said, if 940 could get Football and Basketball (they still have Baseball, right?) and use their local programming to talk 'Dogs they could get a 2.0 or so in the 12+. Maybe more. I really hope Chris Pachecho can get it done.

I have been listening to BOTH ESPNs, 790 and 940. They have exactly the same feed and program on at the same time. What is the meaning of this? THIS is what we lost our ONLY other talk station for???

Got that right Dan'l! And these station owners cry over, and wonder WHY the value of their properties is in the toilet and going DOWN. For the life of me I can't figger how these guys stay afloat.

Yep, they bought 790 just so they could have two play by play's going at one time, and on very rare occasion. Been this way for bout five years now, I think it was just this past year they started putting the A's on 790. And when 790 was sold, it too was our only other talk station.

How about the months that baseball is not in session? (Nov. thru April) Baseball is not a year-round sport. Cannot have play-by-play all of the time.

Not just baseball. Fresno State womens basketball during a Lakers or Niners game.

Still seems like something, anything could be on 790 on the other 99 percent of the time.
