ESPN 950: Hello Nats, Goodbye R-Braves?

In the press release introducing the Washington Nationals to ESPN Radio 950 (WXGI), I noticed that WXGI has committed to "over 130 Nationals games in 2007". The only way they could do that is by booting the R-Braves off the station... there's just no way they could carry 144 R-Braves games and 130 Nats games.

Now... there are two ways to take this...

- The R-Braves need a new radio home for '07, or...
- Richmond needs a new minor league baseball team...

OK, I'm kidding, the R-Braves couldn't leave town that fast, but I could see the Braves spinning this that they really don't want to make a long-term commitment in Richmond until the city commits to them... :)

And where could the R-Braves go in '07, anyway? Both sportstalkers will have full-time major league committments (Orioles on 910, Nationals on 950), and it's not like there's a lot of other choices... I can't see 1140 picking them up, and there's not another decent AM signal in town... and I can't think of an FM that'll disrupt their format for the R-Braves... so this has the potential to get verrrry interesting...

Well Oldies 1073/1003 disrupt their time for VCU RAM Basketball, and their audience is not college students...i'm sure they have more R-Braves baseball audience than Ram basketball.......but I am gonna go for 1140, they do carry racing and football games

The owners of WLES/580 Lawrenceville (soon to be Bon Air), Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting Corp, carries several minor league sports (hockey - AHL, baseball - IL) on its religious stations in Hampton Roads.

Even though WLES/580 will be doing just 201 watts day/27 watts night, the signal is pretty big for 201 watts at that low dial position. I believe the 27 watts at night covers ALL of Richmond...

WLES/580 just filed for additional time to be silent because "ON DECEMBER 15, 2005, THE FCC GRANTED A MAJOR MODIFICATION APPLICATION FOR WLES WHICH CHANGED WLES'S CITY OF LICENSE FROM LAWRENCEVILLE, VA TO BON AIR, VA AND AUTHORIZED THE RELOCATION OF WLES'S TRANSMITTER SITE (BMJP-20041029AEH). WLES IS CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF RELOCATING THE STATION'S EQUIPMENT FROM THE OLD SITE TO THE NEW SITE AND RE-INSTALLING THE EQUIPMENT AT THE NEW SITE. FOR THIS REASON, THE STATION WAS TEMPORARILY TAKEN OFF THE AIR. AN STA IS REQUESTED TO ALLOW WLES TO REMAIN SILENT FOR APPROXIMATELY ANOTHER 60 DAYS UNTIL CONSTRUCTION AT THE NEW SITE IS COMPLETED AND WLES BEGINS OPERATIONS AT THE NEW SITE."

Oldies 1073/1003 only had to carrie but maybe 20 somthing Basketball games. So you'r only breaking programming 20 + times. With The Braves Baseball Games you are talking Breaking Programming 133 times which seems to be about every other night. But you never know.

If the Richmond Braves end up as a lame duck team next year, I don't know why they would even bother to get a new radio home.
