ESPN and Amazon in talks to get Al Michaels

If ESPN gets Al Michaels then welcome back but if Amazon gets Al Michaels then congrats too. Note this is in talks for now.

ESPN is contemplating a pursuit of legendary play-by-player Al Michaels for “Monday Night Football,” The Post has learned.

No final decision on whether to fully engage Michaels has been made, according to sources.

ESPN declined comment.

The potential interest in returning Michaels, 77, to his TV football home — he was the longtime voice of MNF — comes as Michaels is deep into negotiations with Amazon Prime Video about becoming the main voice of its exclusive “Thursday Night Football” package that begins next fall, according to sources.

I thought Michaels already had a deal with Amazon for Thursday Night Football. Guess not.

If ESPN or Amazon do hire Michaels, I'm sure they'll have a second play-by-play person in place, especially given that he's taken some weeks off in recent years (even pre-pandemic, he was taking off a couple weeks a year). He's 77, and because NBC offered him the luxury of not working the entire SNF schedule in the last few years, I can't see him working the full Thursday or Monday slate annually either.

I thought that Al Micheals was going to Amazon for TNF. Troy Aikman's deal with Fox Sports is now up he may not return to Fox as he may want to make Tony Romo type money at about $20Million rumors are that he may be going to Amazon as well read an article on Yahoo about Troy may be leaving Fox Sports.

Aikman is worth 10 times what CBS is overpaying Romo. He's not only a far better game analyst (although Romo is getting better), but he has far more football cred. He has a ring. Romo doesn't, and they both played for the same team.

Fox would be idiots to not pay Aikman what he's worth. He makes Joe Buck sound professional.

How are they overpaying romo when he is a big part of the reason people tune into certain games they'd otherwise probably skip? Its is like saying Phil simms would be better than romo as an announcer.

Was this move expected at Fox or are they surprised.
a combo of both, i think there were rumors of them stealing Tony Romo away from CBS as Troy's replacement, and they possibly were worried about Troy leaving to where Al Michaels was gonna wind up, i can see ESPN winning Aikman as a way to get Al back to the ESPN/ABC fold for Monday Night Football just like old times.

ESPN is after Joe Buck first then Al.

The loser has to take him.
Regardless of his age, I'd take Al Michaels over Joe Buck and most other active play-by-play guys every time. And if the choice is between Al Michaels or Joe Buck, it would even be an stronger preference nationwide for Al Michaels as Joe Buck has a lot of hatred over all message boards and social media.
