ESPN back to 1230 AM WOIC Columbia

According to a tweet by "The Zone," the brokered afternoon show, ESPN will be moving back to AM 1230 WOIC when WZMJ closes to Mike Willis.

Suprising. Moving it to either 102.3 or 93.5 would have been a no brainer, paricularly since they would have kept the male numbers and probably best WARQ.

Interesting development. I know this fits more in to the other thread, but I wonder if the new 93.5 owners could pull off CHR? Their numbers are just terrible...

Unlikely unless their strategy of Urban cradle to grave and non-urban Men 18-59 changes or there is a change in management. I imagine we'll see polar bears on Main Street before either of those things.

Since 93.5 is your competition......

Not after this week's book, that is for sure.

If it were my cluster, I would do exactly what folks were speculating: ESPN to 93.5 102.3 as a broadbased rocker. ESPN would save a huge amount of personnel costs, probably increase the numbers on one FM facility and the consolidation of rock on the other would immediately bolster the male numbers on the other. Sold together, it would lock in a majority of the non-urban/non-country males below 55 years old and with WWDM/WHXT pretty much have that demo locked up. Plus, again, save a lot on programming costs.

Great. Now they can be the number 3 sports station in a 3 way race. I wouldn't want to be there. Of course, right now they're the #3 talk station in a 3 way race. I wouldnt' want to be there either. If it were me, I'd try comedy on WOIC. It has been working in some markets and what do they have to lose?

Right now, of course, they are the #2 sports stations in a 3-way race. 560 is DOA and the audio sounds like phone receiver. Turn off IBOC and increase the audio bandwidth and you might have a better shot.

I don't believe 560 ever went HD. 1400 was for a bit, but they turned it off which is kind of a shame now that they have a music format there.

Then there should be no excuse for 560 sounding as bad as it does. It literally is unlistenable in my car compared to other AM stations. I have a stock German auto radio and can only imagine how bad it sounds on other mid to higher-end systems that the typical sports listener would have in their car.

Does ESPN have any options to get back on a bigger stick?
Theres money in sports in this town. But WOIC isn't going to get that done.
