ESPN Bonus Coverage

I always wanted to know how is ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNEWS able to show coverage of a game on a regional sports network? Such as lastnight ESPN2 had NBA Coast to Coast on which showed a couple mintues of games from regional networks. ESPN also does this during baseball. Say the game ESPN was to air got rained out or went into a delay they would show bonus coverage from a regional sports network. So how is ESPN able to do this? Also this does not count for coverage they are showing from sister network ESPN U or ESPN Plus games.

I'm guessing they make arrangements to get permision to do this extra coverege. As far as the baseball games on ESPN go. Again just a guess but they probably have a back up game just in case of a rain out. I've seen them cover an entire game useing the radio feed of the game for audio and the jumbotron cameras for the video to do a game when the main game was raind out. Again, I would guess they have this all aranged ahead of time as in just in case "a" happens we'll do "b". Again, just my guess, someone else may have more info on the subject.

ESPN's contract with the NBA allows them to cut into any game, but not for more than 10 actual minutes at a time during their 2 hour block on Tuesday nights called "NBA Coast to Coast."

As far as baseball, ESPN can, during "regularly scheduled baseball programming," defined by MLB as games, "Baseball Tonight," and "SportsCenter," cut in to any televised game at any time. The agreements that local stations make are with the teams, not MLB. MLB requires these stations to provide ESPN with a live feed of every game. The network can then use these feeds as they see fit during the aforementioned regularly scheduled baseball programming.
