ESPN Classic and ESPNEWS

Should these two networks be placed on regular cable instead of digital cable? I know in some places ESPN Classic is on regular cable. This question comes up as I noticed ESPN 2's college football game Miami vs Clemson is running over so NASCAR has moved to ESPN Classic. I feel both these networks should just be oftered as regular cable channels. ESPNEWS is only sport scores and highlights while ESPN Classic is classic sports. Then you guys probable ask why not just make ESPN U avaiable on regular cable also. Comments

Should they? Yes, because that's the way ESPN programs their networks, but they won't because of who they are and the power they hold. Recently Time Warner Cable had a spat with ABC/ESPN and they moved Classic to their Sports tier in my area.

I think it was over the summer that I noticed Mike & Mike on ESPN Classic for an hour or 2 because the World Cup was on ESPN, the British Open was on ESPN 2 (M&M's usual home) and Sportscenter was being run on ESPN News (usually bumped to ESPN 2 and M&M is bumped to News)

There must be a priority list for the ESPN Networks, meaning if something is on one ESPN network, and goes over, the new programming is bumped to another ESPN network that isn't airing a live event.

Same happened here Time Warner moved ESPN Classic to digital and replace it with Noggin (now Nick Jr.) At that time they also took Travel Channel off and replaced it with VH-1 Classic.

As for the bump in program I feel all programing shouldn't be bumped. Such as Mike and Mike. If ESPN 2 can't air it because of a live sporting event then Mike and Mike don't get seen. ESPN doesn't need to move them to ESPN Classic or ESPNEWS if ESPN and ESPN 2 are both live with sports in the morning which isn't everyday just once in awhile.

I don't really think I need any more sports channels on my cable system. I already get two Fox RSNs, Versus, ESPN, ESPN2, Speed, Golf Channel, and Big Ten Network. If my team isn't on one of those channels, the chances of it being on ESPN Classic, ESPNews, or ESPNU are pretty slim.

Frankly I don't think you are missing much if you don't have them. ESPNews is just the sports version of the old
Headline News (except when they have to bump Mike and Mike or some other program from the Mother Ship or ESPN2).
ESPN Classic is an intriguing idea, but if you go through their schedule they very rarely show what their name implies,
reruns of old, classic sporting events. (the MLB and NHL networks do a much better job of this in the off season).

ESPN shows sportscenter mostly during the day which is all your sporting news that you would see on ESPNEWS. Im starting to think is ESPNEWS even needed anymore? Anyone else think this?

The best thing about (old) ESPNews was the added info on the scroll, er, rather, the FLIP. It was also nice that they kept it on during non-local commercial breaks. It was much easier to read than the scroll. They also tended to pay attention to things other than the Top Five Stories Of The Day, which is all you get on SportsCenter, over and over and over and over. Or Football 24/7. Now that SportsCenter airs for 6 hours a day on ESPNews and they use the same scroll as ESPN/2/U/Classic, I never bother turning it on.

That's pretty much the way I feel too...and now that the NHL season is starting I know theres nothing for me to care about on any of the ESPN networks.

Can't blame ESPN for not renewing the NHL contract. They got better ratings with college basketball compared to showing a NHL game.

I dont blame them, I love them for it. I can now avoid them all I want since they only care about 2 players in the entire sport.

What is "regular cable"? Here in the Philly area, Comcast Xfinity only offers most (only 1 of 3 PBS stations) over the air stations on analog cable. There are an addional 3 cable channels on analog Xfinity as well, C-span1, EWTN, and QVC. Verizon Fios has no analog cable. You now need a digital box with both services to receive cable now so, it really doesn't matter if a channel is located on digital channel 23 or 523.

Regular cable is having the cable wire coming out of the wall and just hooking it up straight to the TV. No digital box.

Question about Verizon so if you want cable on another TV you need a box? Must be expensive as I am sure they charge rent of the boxes.
