ESPN Deportes Radio Debuts 9/7/12 on 1050 AM

So, if they are looking for a LSM, one would assume that they will also need to bring on board some bilingual sales folks, traffic and continuity and the like. Wonder if they will share facilities and staff with the FM.

Not necessarily, I know of at least two foreign-language stations with predominantly English-speaking-only sales staffs. Many advertisers, especially in larger markets, are large companies that aren't Spanish-only. It definitely helps to be bilingual, though, when it comes to small Spanish-only businesses.

One would assume they'd continue to operate Deportes from 2 Penn Plaza, why would they move?

It will be interesting to see what happens when the Knicks and Rangers are playing at the same time. Will one of the games be heard on 1050 or will the overflow game be heard on WBBR or other NYC AM station?

Is the new ESPN Deportes at 1050 AM will be carried right into the Hudson Valley listening area including Poughkeepsie? I remember back in 2003 when WEOK/WALL at the time had a Spanish format for short time called "El Ritmo". That failed until 2005 when "Radio Disney" came along. But it's to have a Spanish sports station on 1050 when it comes right into the HV area. You know, it's a 50,000 watt station, who cares.

I did once hear a story from a friend to worked at a spanish station. She spoke no spanish and would have no idea of what she was editing or what the commercials she was carting said. Might be strange for the staff if they don;t know what they are putting on the air. I wonder of this will be a radio in a box like Radio Disney. I believe all the spots go to Dallas to be produced and integrated into the local programs. Perhaps this will be the same situation and there will be no local production in NYC. I would imagine studio space is getting kind of scarce at 2 Penn Plaza!

If anyone who want to have an aircheck of the launch of ESPN Deportes at 1050 on 9/7/12, maybe it will appear in the Format Change Archive site. I'm still working at 2 PM, but we shall see if this happens. I get 1050 from Kingston and Poughkeepsie loud and clear to get some Spanish listeners from the defunct "El Ritmo" since 2004 when WEOK and WALL killed the Spanish format. Hudson Valley hasn't had a Spanish format in 8 years. If I have to record the show, we'll see.

Effective at 12 Midnight on September 6, 2012, the 1050 AM/98.7 FM simulcast has ended.

WEPN New York (1050 AM) is now airing a loop of sweepers alternating bilingually in English and Spanish announcing that 98.7 ESPN New York will no longer be heard on 1050 AM and that ESPN Deportes will launch at 2PM on September 7, 2012. The English language sweepers are voiced by various hosts on 98.7 ESPN New York including Mike & Mike, Michael Kay, and Colin Cowherd, among others. The Spanish language sweepers are voiced presumably by an announcer for ESPN Deportes as well as some of that network's hosts.

WEPN-FM New York (98.7 FM) continues regular 98.7 ESPN New York programming, but mentions the change at least once an hour prior to the TOH ID.

Reminiscent of the transitional period on 1050 in late 1988 when WFAN moved to WNBC's old dial position and Spanish WUKQ would begin broadcasting...

Guess what! After 2 PM, 1050 ESPN Radio is now ESPN Deportes. And if you are listening in NYC including most of the Hudson Valley, Long Island or anyplace else including Connecticut, it is now on the air. If you are in the Hudson Valley including Poughkeepsie, Kingston, New Paltz and a few places, you cannot get this station on 98.7, because it's in English, and 1050 is now a Spanish sports station for now. This is the same thing that happened with "El Ritmo" 7 years ago on 1340 and 1390.

I recorded the launch earlier today, so I have post it later tonight.

And now, the moment you're all been waiting for, the aircheck of the launch of ESPN Deportes on 1050 AM. I recorded the launch before 2 PM when I was working in New Paltz, I recorded the last 10 minutes of the stunting earlier today prior to the launch, but you will not be hearing the first 10 minutes of that, but you will hear the launch including the first 22 minutes of ESPN Deportes from earlier today. Mike Greenberg from "Mike & Mike" gave his introduction about the new station at 1050 AM which is all about ESPN Deportes, but you might hear the first 40 minutes of english at the beginning and then transitions to spanish. Mike also made his announcement about the switch to hear your favorite ESPN Radio programming which can be heard only on 98.7, and then after that, Jorge Ramos is the new host for his first show on ESPN Deportes at 1050 AM and you might be hearing it as well.

The reason why I recorded this show, because I can get 1050 AM in New Paltz loud and clear from the city which is 75 miles away. 1050 also carries most of Connecticut, Long Island and even in the Hudson Valley including Poughkeepsie, Kingston, New Paltz, Hyde Park, Fishkill, Saugerties, Catskill and many other places to hear in the daytime especially when you get towards Albany where you can tune in to hear the new spanish sports station which is ESPN Deportes. In case you missed it, here is the aircheck of the launch from earlier today.
